Barrage of mortars fired into Baghdad Green Zone
The Associated PressPublished: July 10, 2007
BAGHDAD: A barrage of around two dozen mortars were fired Tuesday into the Green Zone, the heavily fortified Baghdad district where Iraqi government buildings and the U.S. Embassy are located.
The sound of at least 23 mortars was heard in central Baghdad in the afternoon, and smoke could be seen rising from the Green Zone.
There was no immediate word on casualties or damage. U.S. military helicopters were seen moments later from the Green Zone looking for the firing positions.
Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki warned gunmen a week ago to stop firing rockets and mortar rounds into the Green Zone. Many of the mortar attacks come from the Mahdi Army, a militia loyal to anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, who was once al-Maliki's ally, though Sunni insurgents have also carried out mortar attacks.

BAGHDAD, July 10 (KUNA) ― Some 40 explosions rocked the Iraqi capital's fortified Green Zone, home to the US and British embassies, in the gravest attack on the area since April, 2003.
KUNA's correspondent heard some 40 mortar shell explosions and saw columns of thick smoke and dust rise from areas close to the US Embassy and Iraqi government offices, while US helicopters hovered above and sirens wailed.
This is the largest attack in four years, where shells fell along the zone's western side adjacent to the Euphrates River, but even more shells seem to have fallen within proximity of the US Embassy and government buildings.
Causalities and damages are not yet known, but an eyewitness, requesting anonymity, said four shells fell near the US Embassy and another five near the planning authority. (end) mhg.ema KUNA 101612 Jul 07NNNN

3 Killed in Attack on Green Zone
BAGHDAD (AP) ― A thunderous barrage of mortars or rockets killed at least three people and wounded 18 in the Green Zone on Tuesday, the U.S. Embassy said. One of the dead was an American service member.
An estimated 20 projectiles crashed into the heavily fortified area of Baghdad at about 4:15 p.m.
A U.S. Embassy statement said the dead included one U.S. military member, an Iraqi and a person of unknown nationality.
The 18 wounded included five Americans - two military and three contract employees - the embassy statement said.
Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki warned gunmen a week ago to stop firing rockets and mortar rounds into the Green Zone, which houses the U.S. Embassy and several other foreign missions along with some key Iraqi government offices and the Iraqi parliament.
Many of the attacks come from the Mahdi Army, a militia loyal to anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, who was once al-Maliki's ally, though Sunni insurgents have also carried out mortar attacks.
