Heavy mortar bomb attack on Baghdad Green Zone
Tue 19 Jun 2007 16:57:24 BST
BAGHDAD, June 19 (Reuters) - Militants fired a spate of mortar bombs at Baghdad's Green Zone on Tuesday in one of the heaviest attacks in weeks on the heavily fortified compound that houses the U.S. embassy and Iraqi government offices.
It was unclear if there were any casualties from the barrage of around 10 mortar bombs. Reuters reporters could see several plumes of smoke rising from the compound on the west side of the Tigris River.
Loud sirens warning people to take cover echoed across the zone.
The Green Zone is Baghdad's most secure area but often comes under rocket and mortar attack by militants in other parts of the city. The strikes have lately become more frequent and more accurate.
A mortar attack last week killed an employee of a hotel in the compound, which is also home to numerous Western embassies. There were also a number of casualties in April and May.
On April 12, a suicide bomber killed one lawmaker in the parliament building in the worst breach of security in the Green Zone since the March 2003 invasion to topple Saddam Hussein.

BAGHDAD―__Militants fired mortar rounds into the U.S.-guarded Green Zone at sundown Tuesday, with five of them striking near the office of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and one crashing adjacent to the American post exchange store.
It was not immediately known if there were casualties.
The U.S. military referred questions about the attack to the U.S. Embassy, which did not immediately respond to requests for details.
U.S. soldiers and American contractors in the vicinity of the PX said a building next to the store was hit.
A security official working in al-Maliki's office said one shell landed in the garden of the home of Human Rights Minister Wijdan Mikaeil. Two shells fell short of their Green Zone target, with one hitting near the Jumhuriya Bridge and a second falling into the Tigris River.
One mortar shell landed near the home of Deputy Prime Minister Barham Saleh.
A U.N. report on June 5 said insurgents had bombarded the Green Zone with rockets and mortar fire more than 80 times since March, reportedly killing at least 26 people.
The Green Zone is the location of the U.S. Embassy, the Iraqi parliament and government, and several other embassies__.
