In a dispatch posted at 4:39pm Baghdad time Tuesday afternoon, the Association of Muslim Scholars of Iraq (AMSI) reported that several prisoners being held in the notorious American Camp Bucca Prison in southern Iraq on Monday, 14 May 2007, were wounded and others suffered asphyxiation and poisoning when American forces fired tear gas and beat up prisoners, according to eyewitnesses.
The AMSI reported the witnesses as saying that prisoners had organized a rally and protest demonstration over the bad conditions to which they are subject and over the fact that they are never brought before any kind of legal court to decide their cases, but kept indefinitely in the American prison.
AMSI noted that thousands of prisoners languish in the ill-reputed Camp Bucca, which is located in Umm Qasr on the demarcation line between Iraq and Kuwait. A large percentage of the prisoners are Sunnis from northern and western Iraq, making it extremely difficult risky for their relatives to pay them visits in the southern, predominantly Shi‘i region of the country where US forces have fostered the activity of Shi‘i sectarian militias since invading the country in the spring of 2003. Many of the inmates have been incarcerated for years with no trial or hope of getting out.
There have been numerous protests and rallies within the prisons run by the American occupation authorities and the puppet regime the US installed in Iraq, but in general the US keeps a tight lid on all such developments to prevent the world from hearing about them. Relatives of prisoners have presented numerous appeals to the world for the improvement of the conditions in the prison camps and for some sort of end to the indefinite incarceration to which the prisoners are now subject.
