Fire devastates Palestinian refugee camp on Iraq-Syrian border.

In a dispatch posted at 5:54pm Baghdad time Wednesday afternoon, the Association of Muslim Scholars of Iraq (AMSI) reported that fire gutted a Palestinian refugee camp set up in the no-man’s land between Iraq and Syria on Wednesday, burning a number of tents and injuring several refugees who suffered from smoke inhalation. The fire was still burning at the time of reporting.

The AMSI reported residents of the camp as saying that the fire was ignited by a number of cooking gas cylinders that exploded. The witnesses said that the fire caused fear and confusion, especially among women and children as the refugees tried to use what meager resources were at their disposal to extinguish the blaze. They called for help from the nearest fire department, but trucks took two hours to arrive in the camp, which two days earlier was swept by an intense sandstorm.

Pro-Iranian Shi‘i sectarian militias have been terrorizing whole neighborhoods of Palestinians out of the homes in which they have lived in Baghdad and other parts of Iraq for decades.
