Two local people unconnected with the procession were killed in the attack and others were wounded, some of them severely. The witnesses said that the blast inflicted heavy damage on nearby houses and damaged the facade of the al-Furqan Mosque as well. Baghdad.
Notorious Shi‘i sectarian cleric Jalal as-Saghir targeted in bomb attack Thursday.
In a dispatch posted at 6:45pm Makkah time Thursday evening, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that an Iraqi Resistance bomb exploded by the motorcade of the notorious Iranian Shi‘i sectarian Imam Jalal as-Saghir in the as-Sayyidiyah area of Baghdad on Thursday morning.
The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that the bomb damaged a vehicle in the motorcade and killed three of as-Saghir’s companions. Witnesses said that Jalal as-Saghir was in the motorcade of bullet-proof four-wheel-drive Badr Brigade vehicles at the time of the attack, which took place in front of the veterinary clinic in as-Sayyidiyah.
The correspondent reported that US and puppet Iraqi forces surrounded the area after the attack. The Americans announced that three companions of as-Saghir were killed in the explosion but no mention was made regarding the notorious Shi‘i Imam himself.
The Iranian-born Shi‘i cleric Jalal as-Saghir is a member of the puppet “Iraqi Parliament” and is also the Imam of the Buratha Mosque, a headquarters for Shi‘i sectarian gunmen and a well-known torture chamber for captive Sunnis. When US forces raided Buratha mosque and torture facility on Wednesday, 14 February 2007, they found and set free 12 Sunnis undergoing torture. They also discovered the bodies of Six other Sunnis who had been tortured to death by as-Saghir’s men.
At the time the Baghdad correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported puppet security sources as saying that the raided the Shi‘i mosque at about 2:30am Wednesday morning and came out at about 5:15am on the 14th. During their operation inside the Americans seized seven Iranian M1 machine guns, hand grenades, sniper rifles, silencers, and dozens of official identification cards of the puppet regime − IDs used by followers of Jalal as-Saghir in their sectarian attacks.
The source said that the Americans spent more than an hour searching through the graveyard behind the Shi‘i mosque. They placed more than 40 phosphorous strips on more than 40 graves believed to be those of Sunnis murdered in the mosque and secretly buried there. The US forces also confiscated cash estimated at US$320,000 as well as portable telephones.
The Americans destroyed Jalal as-Saghir’s office and searched through his papers and files, trampling his turban with their boots.
The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent noted at the time of the American raid on the Buratha mosque that Jalal as-Saghir had in the past hailed the American invaders as the heaven-sent saviors of the Shi‘ah of Iraq. His operations were coming under US scrutiny, however, because the Iranian regime − making use of the Shi‘i sectarian militias and US-installed Iraqi puppet security and military forces has increasinglybeen extending its regional hegemony in a bid to step into the shoes of the American occupation in Iraq as it leaves under the blows of the Iraqi Resistance.
The US, which has made use of Shi‘i sectarian militias in its drive to occupy and control Iraq, is now attempting to reduce Iranian influence in the country and has begun to try to rein in the more extreme sectarian militias. But since those same sectarian militias constitute the backbone of the Iraqi puppet army, police, and security services, the effectiveness of any such American effort is bound to be extremely limited.
There was no indication on Thursday that the Americans had tried to arrest or detain the notorious Shi‘i sectarian cleric after the attempt on his life.
