As Iraqi Universities Come Under Attack, Staying Alive Is Students' Top Priority

BAGHDAD, Feb. 26
Dozens of students were killed and more wounded yesterday
when a female suicide bomber blew herself up in a crowd
as they gathered to take exams at Baghdad's oldest college.
バグダッド最古の大学で試験を受ける為に学生達が集まった時、
女性の自爆テロ犯が群衆の中で彼女自身を爆破し、
何十人もの学生達が殺され、更に多くの人達が昨日負傷しました。
At a university just a few weeks ago, college students weren't checking
test scores, CBS News chief foreign correspondent Lara Logan reports.
They were searching lists for the names of dead friends,
brutally slaughtered the last time their school was attacked in January.

It happened as they were heading home after class,
killing close to 100 young people.
Even battle-weary citizens of Baghdad were shocked.
But those most affected were the survivors.

"One of my friends called my name.
I turned around and said, 'What, Ali?'
That's when the car bomb exploded,"
Aziz Hamed Aziz says, crying.

Aziz lost eight friends in the two blasts.
He believes he survived because Ali was literally blown on top of him.

"I was talking to him, telling him to get up, but there was no answer.
Then I pushed him off me and that's when I realized he was dead,"
Aziz says.
"I never expected that.
I never thought everything would be gone in one second."

Aziz had left his girlfriend only moments before.
He searched frantically through the dead and wounded to find her.
"I saw the bus that she takes, completely destroyed.
There was a dead guy inside, but my girlfriend was on the ground,
shouting my name," he says.
"I held her to my chest, but she was afraid people would see us.
That's when I started to cry and told her
'No one is left to be shy from; they're all dead.'"
アジズさんはほんの少し前にガールフレンドと分かれたばかりでした。
彼は半狂乱になって死傷者の中から彼女を探しました。
「彼女がいつも乗るバスが完全に破壊されていました。
中に死んだ男性がいました。
私のガールフレンドは、側に立ち私の名前を叫んでいました」
私は彼女を胸に抱きました。

When CBS News first spoke to Aziz after the bombing,
he was determined to finish his studies for those friends.
But he says now that he hasn't the heart to go back to the place
where he saw them die.
爆発後、CBSニュースが最初にアジズに話をした時、
彼は友人達の為に彼の研究を終える決意が強かったです。
しかし現在、彼は、皆が死ぬのを見た所に戻る心を持っていないと言います。
"I just want to ask the whole world - not only Iraqis -
and this is coming from my heart:
Have mercy on the Iraqi people," Aziz says.
"The hardest thing about all of this is when I feel there's a mother
who lost a son, when a lover loses his love."
「イラク人だけにではなく、世界全体に頼みたいのです。
そしてそれは私の心から来ます：イラクの人々に慈悲を」

Aziz's generation is meant to be the future of Iraq,
but he says Iraq no longer has a future and even if peace returns,
the wounds will take hundreds of years to heal.
アジズさんの世代はイラクの未来である筈です。
しかし彼はイラクにもう未来はないと言います。
そしてたとえ平和が戻るとしても、傷が癒えるのに何百年も要するでしょう」
