The arrest took place shortly after ‘Ammar al-Hakim’s convoy had come under fire near al-Kut.
The al-Kut correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that US forces arrested the younger al-Hakim along with 17 of his companions on the highway leading to the Iranian border.
In a dispatch posted at 7:35pm Makkah time Friday evening, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that the convoy in which ‘Ammar al-Hakim was riding came under fire near a rest stop on the highway near al-Kut at 3:15pm Friday afternoon.
The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported from the scene of the attack that one of ‘Ammar’s companions was killed in that attack and a second one wounded. Minutes after the motorcade came to a halt, a force of seven US Humvees with air cover from two helicopters pulled up on the scene and surrounded ‘Ammar’s convoy. They placed ‘Ammar under arrest, put a black bag on his head, and loaded him aboard a helicopter that flew him off to the nearby an-Nu‘maniyah base.
‘Ammar al-Hakim’s surviving companions were laded aboard Humvees and ddrive off to an unknown destination. The cars in which the band had been making their way towards the Iranian border were left in the middle of the highway with their doors open.
Puppet police cars showed up on the scene after the departure of the Americans and took the corpse and the one wounded man away.
The correspondent reported that ‘Ammar al-Hakim, accompanied by traveling bags, had been heading towards the Iranian border via Badrah and not the nearby town of Zurbatiyah as was earlier reported.
Shi‘i sectarian forces accused the Americans of having carried out the attack on ‘Ammar al-Hakim’s convoy, noting that the area where the attack took place, which is close to the Iranian border, is generally under the control of the Badr Brigades and their allies the Jaysh al-Mahdi but that US forces have been active there in an effort to prevent the smuggling of Iranian arms over the borders to the Shi‘i sectarian militias in Iraq.
Earlier, in a dispatch posted at 5:08pm Makkah time Friday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that ‘Ammar al-Hakim had come under fire as he was traveling on the road near al-Kut, 190km southeast of Baghdad.
The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that puppet government troops and Badr Brigade militiamen − SCIRI’s armed wing − had encircled the area where the attack took place. Afterwards, US troops arrived on the scene and arrested ‘Ammar along with all those who were accompanying him in his convoy to Iran. Witnesses said that the Americans put a black bag on ‘Ammar al-Hakim’s head and lead him way to an unknown destination.
When US troops invaded Iraq in the spring of 2003, they were accompanied and assisted by the 20,000-30,000-man Badr Brigade militia, the armed wing of SCIRI, which had been training in Iran for an attack on Iraq for decades. SCIRI political leaders − all of them Shi‘i sectarian clerics − aided the US invasion of Iraq and then the Badr Brigade militia became the core of US-backed Iraqi puppet police, “National Guard,” army and security forces set up following the occupation.
Over the last year, however, Iranian influence in Iraq has dramatically increased as Tehran prepares to step into the boots of the American occupation when it departs the country under the blows of the Iraqi Resistance. The US recently launched new “security plans” in Iraq in an effort to contain and reduce the influence of its erstwhile Iranian allies in the country.
