The correspondent reported that Hanun was the second person to be assassinated on the governing council in as-Samawah. ‘Abd al-Majid az-Zalimi, another such official, was shot to death in the city last month. During January the Jaysh al-Mahdi Shi‘i sectarian militia plunged as-Samawah into violence when it launched an armed campaign to take control of the city and its municipal departments in order to put them under the domination of pro-Iranian cleric Muqtada as-Sadr.
The Shi‘i sectarian Jaysh al-Mahdi militia, run by Muqtada as-Sadr, a Shi‘i cleric loyal to Iran’s “conservatives,” is seeking to extend its regional hegemony and step into the shoes of the American occupation in Iraq as it leaves under the blows of the Iraqi Resistance. The US, on the other hand, which has made use of Shi‘i sectarian militias such as the Badr Brigades − close to Iran’s pro-western “liberals” − and the Jaysh al-Mahdi in its drive to occupy and control Iraq is now attempting to reduce Iranian influence in the country. Battles over turf have therefore increased in recent months between the US and some of its allies and the Jaysh al-Mahdi acting on behalf of Iran.
