An-Najaf Province.
An-Najaf.
Shi‘i movement of Ahmad al-Hasan denies involvement in Sunday battle in an-Najaf, contrary to claims by Iraqi puppet regime.
In a dispatch posted at 11:55pm Makkah time Tuesday night, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that the religious group loyal to Ahmad al-Hasan had issued a communiqu a short while earlier stating that their organization had no connection with the battle that took place on Sunday, 28 January in the az-Zarkah gardens in an-Najaf. The puppet regime in Baghdad had claimed that the fighting that took place in an-Najaf had been caused by an uprising of the Shi‘i religious leader Ahmad al-Hasan, who reportedly claims to be a messenger from the Shi‘i eschatological figure the Imam al-Mahdi.
The an-Najaf correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that Ahmad al-Hasan and his organization said that they had nothing to do with the charges that have been leveled against them, accusing them of having attacked the city in an attempt to kill the Shi‘i religious authorities there.
The communiqu described Ahmad al-Hasan’s organization known as the Jund as-Sama’ ミ the Army of Heaven ミ as a peaceful school of thought. The communiqu, which was pasted up on streets throughout the city, including in the ash-Shurtah, al-Hananah, al-Qadisiyah, al-‘Askari and other neighborhoods of the city, saying that those who died in the fighting were Shi‘ah, specifically members of the al-Hatimi and al-Khaz‘ali tribes.
The Ahmad al-Hasan communiqu said that it would be issuing another statement proving that those killed by the puppet regime forces in the Sunday engagement were civilians and included women and children.
On Monday, Mafkarat al-Islam published an account by a member of the al-Hatimi tribe saying that the Sunday engagement was not a battle by puppet forces and US helicopters against al-Qa‘idah or the Ahmad al-Hasan organization. According to the report about 200 members of the al-Hatimi and al-Khaz‘ali tribes were coming on an annual pilgrimage to an-Najaf on the occasion of ‘Ashura’ when puppet forces, who they believed belonged to the pro-American Badr Brigades, opened fire on a car carrying a disabled member of the tribe, killing him, his wife, and their driver.
The tribesmen responded by attacking the puppet regime checkpoint that had fired on them and a battle ensued in which some 100 members of the al-Hatimi tribe and 30 members of the al-Khaz‘ali tribe were killed.
Both tribes are Shi‘i of Arab origin and have repeatedly expressed their opposition to the pro-Iranian regime in Baghdad. They demonstrated in protest against the assassination of Iraqi President Saddam Husayn. The account published in Mafkarat al-Islam on Monday stated that the puppet regime, rather than tell the truth about what happened in an-Najaf on Sunday, concocted two different tales, one that the battle had been against Arab fighters from al-Qa‘idah and the second that the fighting was targeted on a Shi ‘ group lead by Ahmad al-Hasan who proclaims himself to be a messenger from the expected Mahdi.
