天木直人氏が僧侶字をやっていた（1997-2000)デトロイトと豊田市は姉妹都市。豊田市といえば、トヨタ自動車の町。トヨタのシニアー・アドバイサーとジェイ・ロックフェラーはICU時代のクラスメイト。

また今年６月付けの「Japan Times」には、外務省のスキャンダルについて、「週刊金曜日」からの引用として記事が掲載されている。ここに天木直人氏の事も書かれている。
2001年頃、外務省の役人が公金5,400万円を着服して、競馬馬を購入していたことが発覚した事件があったが、今度は世界各地の在外公館が所有していた98点もの絵画やその他の美術品が行方不明になっている。これはYUKICHI MAEDA議員が2002年の8月より始めた調査がきっかけとなって判明したもの。
「元レバノン大使だった（2001ー2003年8月）天木直人氏は、＜自分が目録を照合した時、目録に書かれている絵と壁にかかっている絵とが異なっていたので、どうしたのかと部下に聞いたところ、あれは良くないので取り替えたといった＞といっている」とのこと(笑）。

Who's got the painting?

Around 2001, Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs was rocked by a number of scandals. In one, it was revealed that a former director of the overseas visits support division "misappropriated" some 54 million yen in public funds, with which he purchased several racehorses.
Attempts to instill transparency at the ministry still appear to be lagging. Writing in Shukan Kinyobi, journalist Kenichi Kita claims that over the past four and a half years, at least 98 objets d'art have vanished from Japanese embassies and consulates abroad. The revelations surfaced as a result of an investigation into bureaucratic waste conducted by DPJ Diet member Yukichi Maeda from August 2002.
Items said missing from a detailed list provided by the ministry include originals and reproductions of paintings, calligraphy, scrolls and ceramics.
According to a two-page list in the magazine, the Japanese legation in Paraguay leads the pack with seven items that have disappeared, followed by six in Belgium, Indonesia, Guatemala and the consulate in Atlanta, Ga. Five are missing from the consulate in New Orleans and the embassy in Kenya; four from France, Toronto, Canada and Belem, Brazil; three from South Africa and Guangzhou, China; and two from Seattle, New York, Panama, Peru, Australia and South Korea.
In terms of their estimated worth, the top three include Haruhiko Kawasaki's "Mount Fuji in Early Spring" — said to be valued at over 20 million yen — followed by works by Reiji Hiramatsu (8.82 million yen) and Keiichi Fukuda (6.3 million yen).
Shukan Kinyobi suggests that the system by which art items are commissioned, procured and maintained appears both ambiguous and slipshod.
"The Foreign Ministry requested me to paint that picture," one unnamed artist, whose missing work was sent to the United States is quoted as telling the magazine. "I considered it an honor to have it hanging in the embassy's foyer. They paid me for it. But I haven't heard a thing about any damage or repairs."
Naoto Amagi, who served as ambassador to Lebanon between February 2001 and August 2003, recalled that before his posting, he took an inventory of the embassy's contents and found a picture was missing.
"When I inquired, a subordinate told me, 'That picture we purchased was no good, so we took it down. But on the other hand, there were items hanging on the walls not recorded in the inventory. The records were a shambles."
In his polemic "I and my Career were Ruined by the Foreign Ministry" (Kodansha), former diplomat Hiromu Kobayashi, who was arrested for abuse of funds in 2001, claimed that "Some of the worst ambassadors would smash vases they didn't like, claiming 'breakage' so they could change it to something new."
In response to the allegations, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson informed Shukan Kinyobi, "The items that disappeared from the most recent list have been stored temporarily for repair purposes. Other items overseas, during transfer, showed wear from aging and were discarded."
"Its important to transmit Japanese culture overseas," says Diet member Maeda. "But allowing diplomats to spend money at their own discretion is asking for trouble. I've even heard that when ambassadors at embassies in Scandinavian countries stepped down, they sold off the art works at garage sales, and the Ministry was thrown into a tizzy trying to buy them back."
