Japanese Ambassador Summoned Over Comfort Girls

THE HAGUE, 17/03/07 - Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen on Friday called the Japanese ambassador to account on his government's position that there is no evidence that Asian women were forced to be sex slaves during the Second World War.

The Japanese government stated that it has found no evidence whatsoever that directly shows women were coerced into military brothels. Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende said after Friday's weekly cabinet meeting that he was unpleasantly surprised by this statement. The Netherlands has summoned the ambassador to give a "clear political signal" to Japan, according to Balkenende.

Japan acknowledged the existence of so-called comfort girls in a declaration in 1993. Last month the Dutch asked Japan for clarification after the country withdrew this declaration. But as this withdrawal was reversed the next day the Netherlands took no further action then.

The fresh denial causes Balkenende "concern". He said the Netherlands wants to know "what is the status of the reports". The premier could imagine that there was irritation in other countries as well and said that "possibly" these countries could discuss joint steps later on.

日本（政府）は、1993年の宣言（河野談話）により、いわゆる「慰安婦」の存在を認めた。先月、同国がこの宣言を撤回した後、オランダ人は日本に対して明確化を求めた。しかし翌日、この撤回が取り消されたことで、オランダはそれ以上の行動に出ることはなかった。

この新たな否定は、バルケネンデ首相の関心を呼び起こしている。「この報告の状況はどうなっているのか」をオランダは知りたい、と彼は言った。首相は、他の国々には苛立ちがあったと想像でき、「ことによると今後、これらの国々が共同歩調をとることを議論しうる」と語った。
