Defense seeks acquittal of far-right activist Ernst Zundel at German trial

MANNHEIM, Germany: Defense lawyers on Friday urged a German court to acquit Ernst Zundel, a far-right activist who was deported from Canada, of incitement charges stemming from persistent denial of the Holocaust.

The defense team called for Zundel's acquittal during a court session in which one lawyer, Ludwig Bock, quoted from Adolf Hitler's "Mein Kampf" and from Nazi race laws.

Bock accused the state court in Mannheim of not wanting to face a "scientific analysis" of the Holocaust and charged that prosecutors -- one of whom has termed Zundel a "rat catcher" -- had defamed his client.

Prosecutors accuse Zundel, a 66-year-old German deported from Canada in 2005, of years of anti-Semitic activities, including denying the Holocaust -- a crime in Germany -- in documents and on the Internet.

They have urged the court to convict Zundel of 14 counts of incitement and sentence him to five years in prison.
