U.S. Tells India To Drop Iran Pipeline
Mar 23, 2007
The U.S. is opposed to a pipeline project that would bring Iranian gas to India as it could further Tehran's nuclear ambitions, U.S. Energy Secretary Samuel W. Bodman said.
"There has been conversation between India and other nations and Iran about finding ways of developing oil and gas assets and if that is allowed to go forward, in our judgment, this will contribute to development of nuclear weapons," Bodman told reporters.
But the energy secretary, who ended a three-day visit to India on Thursday, said U.S. opposition to the pipeline would not affect the historic India-U.S. nuclear pact, which President George W. Bush signed in December.
"We continue to voice that and on the other hand will continue to work with the Indian government and finalizing arrangements of civil nuclear cooperation. They operate in separate areas," he said.
Bodman, who said the primary focus of his visit was civilian nuclear cooperation, visited two nuclear reactors at Tarapur, around 100 km south of Mumbai.
Bodman, who met with top government officials in New Delhi, didn't mince words on the pipeline issue. "It is against the interest of the U.S., it is against the interest of the world. Supporting any nuclear weapon program is against the interest of the world."
India wants to build a $7 billion pipeline from Iran through neighboring Pakistan that would deliver 5 million tons of liquefied natural gas annually over a 25-year period from 2009. New Delhi hopes to finalize a deal on the pipeline with Tehran by June.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist), which is a key supporter for the ruling coalition, has said the government should go ahead with its pipeline plans.
"The gas pipeline project from Iran is of vital interest to India and its energy security. The government must proceed with the gas pipeline project," the party said in a statement.
