Karbala’ Province.
Karbala’.
Nine reported killed in clashes between US occupation troops and Shi ‘ sectarians in Shi‘i holy city Karbala’ Friday morning.
In a dispatch posted at 3:54pm Makkah time Friday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that sources in the puppet police and in hospitals reported that nine people had been killed, a number of them civilians, in clashes between US occupation troops and the fighters associated with the Shi‘i sectarian Jaysh al-Mahdi militia in the Shi‘i holy city of Karbala’, 110km southwest of Baghdad, on Friday.
Mafkarat al-Islam reported that the fighting erupted wnen US troops entered the city at dawn Friday and attempted to arrest several members of the Jaysh al-Mahdi militia. The Jaysh al-Mahdi fought back, compelling the Americans to call in helicopter reinforcements. Hospital sources said that at least 25 people were killed in the fighting, among them civilians, and six members of the Jaysh al-Mahdi were captured by the US occupation forces.
Usually the US forces remain outside of Karbala’, preferring to leave the city in the hands of the Shi‘i sectarian militias like the Jaysh al-Mahdi that generally collaborate with the Americans. The US offered no explanation for the unusual Friday morning raid.
The battle reflected the uneasy relationship between the US occupation forces and the Shi‘i sectarian militias which are backed by Iran yet provide the core of the puppet security forces upon which the Americans rely in attempting to control Iraq. Although the US and Iran agreed on Tuesday, 24 July, to join forces against the Iraqi Resistance, Iran continues to work to step into the shoes of the US occupiers when they leave Iraq, while the US tries to assert American control of the country, while trying to limit Iranian influence.
Al-Basrah Province.
Al-Basrah.
Shi‘i sectarian turf wars: US-installed “Iraqi Parliament” dismisses puppet governor of al-Basrah.
In a dispatch posted at 1:05pm Makkah time Friday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that the US-installed puppet “Iraqi Parliament,” which is dominated by the collaborationist Shi‘i clerical “United Iraqi Alliance” coalition, had dismissed the puppet “Governor” of al-Basrah, Muhammad Muslih al-Wa’ili, a member of a Shi‘i party that broke away from the UIA in March.
Mafkarat al-Islam reported that the puppet parliament took the move after the puppet municipal council in the southern Iraqi city requested it.
Intense political differences have arisen between the rival Shi‘i sectarian parties over al-Basrah, following the Fadilah Party decision on 7 March 2007 to pull out of the main Shi‘i sectarian “United Iraqi Alliance” coalition (that includes the Shi‘i “Supreme Islamic Iraqi Council (SIIC, formerly known as SCIRI)” and the Jaysh al-Mahdi and other followers of Muqtada as-Sadr.
The puppet governor of al-Basrah, Muhammad al-Wa’ili, is a member of the Fadilah Party and his office has been the target of repeated attacks by the rival Shi‘i factions, angry over his party’s criticism of their practices of rampant sectarian killing and separatism. The main Shi ‘ sectarian “United Iraqi Alliance” is seeking to reassert its control over the vital city of al-Basrah before Britain completes its withdrawal from southern Iraq, leaving the Fadilah party in charge there.
