News this weekend that the military PR man who covered the Roswell aliens case has died. Before departing this mortal coil, however, he signed a sworn affidavit claiming that he really did see dead aliens way back in in 1947.

I hope he really was telling the truth. I’d love to get an afternoon call from a species from a neighbouring galaxy. It would really be something to remember, so long as they didn’t wipe my memory.

Has anyone ever heard the theory that aliens are advanced members of our own species that have learned to travel back through time? The theory goes that, if you look at the evolutionary process of neanderthal man to homosapien, two striking features of that evolution have been a gradual narrowing of the jaw and an enlargement of the cerebral cortex, the frontal lobes of the brain. Should this continue for another few million years then our jaws would keep becoming thinner and thinner and our heads bigger and bigger until we end up looking very much like the generic images we see of aliens.

It’s probably just a neat story, but there we go. People who know such things believe that the physics of time-travel would preclude a human body from ever surviving the journey, but our knowledge of physics will continue to change too, so in a million years or so we might see things differently. I wish it were true because if these aliens are highly evolved homos coming back from the future then it would mean, at the very least, that we did not decimate life on earth (as is often predicted) in some Armageddon, and thus Shakespeare, Mozart, Titian and AC/DC may have survived after all.
