ペンタゴン筋で開発し終えたかもしれないという闇の巨大強力兵器という議論、つい最近も、WTC崩壊論議でたち現れた。私はこの種の議論は一種の偽科学であると考えている。
地震を兵器にするには、前提として、何処で地震が起きそうであるかを見極めねばならぬ。つまり地震予知である。下に紹介したように地震予知研究の現状は依然として雨が降ったら桶や儲かる(風がであったか？）に似た議論のレベルである。水が溜まれば滑りやすくなり北京でと言う議論も以前ここで紹介されていた。

The dark clouds that tip rain on California during the winter and spring may have an even darker side. They seem to bring earthquakes in their wake.
Lizet Christiansen of the US Geological Survey in Menlo Park, California, and her team analysed 5337 low to medium-strength earthquakes recorded along the San Andreas fault near the town of Parkfield from 1984 to 2005. They found that the number of tremors increased appreciably from August to January, about five months after the rains stopped (Geophysical Research Letters, DOI: 10.1029/2006GL028634).
Christiansen, who has previously observed similar seasonal trends around volcanoes in other parts of the western US, believes the explanation lies in how water penetrates bedrock. On the San Andreas fault, she says, rain falling early in the year seeps in through pores in the upper layers of rock, raising the water table. The weight of the water exerts pressure on lower layers, adding stress to faults that lie deeper in the Earth's crust, which in turn can trigger earthquakes.

If Christiansen is right, it would explain the five-month lag between the end of the rains and the increase in earthquake activity, as water would take a few months to diffuse through the bedrock and into the water table.
Other researchers think that Christiansen's idea is plausible. Anthony Lowry of Utah State University, Logan, calculates that the rainwater exerts forces of about 200 to 300 pascals on faults - far less than the 3000 to 30,000 pascals of stress the faults endure from the movement of tectonic plates. Even the smaller forces exerted by rainwater exert enough stress to set up resonances along the fault.
Lowry reasons that stress resonance could set up a peculiar type of earthquake that releases as much energy as a magnitude 6.5 or 7.0 tremblor, but does so over weeks and months, and doesn't register on seismometers.
These quakes are detected by monitoring the movement of the Earth's surface using GPS devices. Lowry studies these so-called "silent" quakes in southern Mexico and Puget Sound in the US Pacific Northwest, and has found seasonal variations similar to those Christiansen observed on the San Andreas fault.
Definitively linking the quakes in the Parkfield area to silent quakes would shed light on the causes behind seasonal patterns in seismic activity. That understanding might eventually lead to the ability to predict quakes, though Lowry admits that is still a long way off. "The science is still very much in its infancy - it will probably be another 30 years of work before we get there."
