2006-11-03
APA-Beijing (China) Beijing has been dressed up in the traditional Chinese red lanterns and billboards featuring typical images of Africa and posters depicting Sino-African cooperation in the run-up to the 3rd Africa-China summit due to open Saturday in Beijing, APA observes here Friday.
Banners carrying words of welcome line major streets, highlighting the summit’s theme of "friendship, peace, development and co-operation." in English, French and Chinese.
Big posters of different African landscapes, culture, civilisation and people hanged all over Beijing streets and changed its idle routine. "Africa ― the land of myth and miracles," proclaims one poster, featuring an elephant.
Flower beds have been set up on the Tiananmen Square, the center of Beijing not far from the main summit venue and the residence of the African guests. Usually this level of decoration is reserved for the National Day on October 1st.
"This is expected to be the largest summit ever staged in the country since 1949. It is also a milestone marking China-Africa economic co-operation and cultural exchanges," Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said Thursday at a regular news briefing.
Beijing, the city of 16 million inhabitants will also implement temporary traffic measures on major roads leading to the airport, conference venue and hotels during the summit. Around 80 per cent of government cars will be banned from the streets.
High-level delegations from 48 countries will attend this Summit. Besides, over 20 international organizations will be present at it as observers. To ensure security and smooth proceeding of the Summit, we will take necessary traffic control measures in Beijing to guarantee all the delegates come to the Summit timely and smoothly, said Jianchao.
Beijing authorities have also mobilized 810,000 volunteers from all walks of life to patrol residential communities and streets as an extra security measure, according to reports by the Xinhua News Agency.
More than 3,000 people from Africa will attend the event, according to the Chinese foreign ministry. And at least 20 five-star hotels in the Chinese capital will host state leaders and delegates.
Meanwhile, 15 African leaders arrived in Beijing Thursday, including presidents of Zambia, Ghana and Kenya, and nine others had arrived earlier for the Beijing Summit.
On the sidelines of the Beijing Summit, the Chinese government is also putting up a campaign to promote African culture among citizens, with two exhibitions opening here Thursday, one of coins and stamps from 48 African countries and the other of African handicraft, to showcase African landscapes, places of historical interest and relations with China.
"It’s a good opportunity for ordinary Chinese to have a glimpse of Africa," said Cheng Hui, an avid collector who provided some of the handicraft pieces on show. "Many Africans are born to be artists. Even items from 2,000 years ago still make vogue artwork today."
So far over 1,200 Chinese and overseas journalists have been registered for the covering of the summit, including 118 African reporters that have arrived in Beijing. About 300 African reporters are also gearing up for the Third Ministerial Conference on Friday, and the summit over the weekend.
