AWOL Eugene soldier arrested, to be returned to Ft. Lewis
04:55 PM PDT on Wednesday, June 14, 2006
Associated Press
EUGENE, Ore. -- After deserting her Army unit in January to avoid a second tour of duty in Iraq, Eugene solider Suzanne Nicole Swift was to be returned to Fort Lewis, Wash. Tuesday.
Eugene police arrested Swift, a 21-year old specialist with a military police unit, Sunday at her mother's house. According to Eugene police spokesman Sgt. Rich Stronach, Swift was taken to the Lane County Jail, where she was expected to be handed over to military police and returned to the Army base near Tacoma.
Fort Lewis Army spokesman Joe Hitt confirmed that Swift would be returned but declined to elaborate. He said that her company commander will determine the punishment and that no decision had been made.
Swift's mother, Sara Rich, said her daughter was packed and ready to leave. But just days before the redeployment she had her car keys in hand and broke down.
"She turned to me in the kitchen and said, `I can't go back there.' I said, `Good, don't do it,' " Rich said.
Swift could not be reached for comment. But her mother said her daughter told her she had profound doubts about the war, after seeing it firsthand.
Rich said her daughter said she thought the war lacked purpose and that no one had benefited from it. And Swift wrote her mother from Iraq about being repeatedly sexually harassed.
Swift first went to Iraq in February of 2004. She was stationed in Karbala, about 60 miles southwest of Baghdad, a holy site to Shiite Muslims that has seen its share of the violence.
Swift came home to Fort Lewis in February 2005, believing she had the standard 18 months before being redeployed, her mother said.
Then Swift was asked to return seven months early. It was the last thing Swift wanted to do, her mother said.
According to the Pentagon, the number of soldiers absent without leave is less than 1 percent of the total.
In 2005, 2,011 soldiers were reported AWOL, down from 4,483 in 2002, the spokesman said. Larry Hildes, a Bellingham, Wash., attorney representing Swift is part of a National Lawyers Guild task force on military law, said those figures don't add up. He said there are hundreds of lawyers around the nation representing deserting soldiers.
He said he has handled a dozen such cases since the Iraq war began. A national hotline dealing with rights of servicepeople gets a minimum of 2,000 calls a month, Hildes said, mostly from soldiers who don't want to return to war.
"An increasing number have been to Iraq and are refusing to go back. I've got interrogators and military police officers who will not go back," Hildes said.
Punishment for desertion can range from a reprimand to a court martial and five-year prison sentence.
Rich, a Eugene social worker who opposes the war, said she would rather see her daughter imprisoned for desertion than returned to Iraq.
Hildes said the last he heard base officials were considering a nonjudicial punishment, possibly an administrative discharge.

Letter from Suzanne Swift's Mom
Suzanne joined the Army with stars in her eyes.
She was told she wouldsee far away travel,
be trained as a military police officer
and when she got out
she would be given money for college.
Hell of a deal.
Not once did the recruiter mention
the deadly statistics for women in the military
and how going to war dehumanizes many soldiers to a point
where they think that
raping and harassing women is acceptable behavior.
What has happened to Suzanne is happening to 2 out of every three womenin the military right now.
Young women and men are being subjected to sexual harassment, intimidation and assault every day
and this is a national call to action.
We must stop the climate of fear that our soldiers are living in every day.
No more sweeping it under the carpet.
Help us change the system where this is acceptable and victims are dismissed and their needs ignored.
Take action and pay attention.
My daughter is stepping up with her very life.
What are you going to do to effect change today?
Support Suzanne and thousands of others in taking action.
We demand that
Suzanne be given a full honorable discharge from the Army
and that all her mental heath needs be fully met.
On this July 15, Suzanne will be 22 years old.
Don't allow her to spend another minute under the care of a system that fails so many of it's own every day.
Suzanne deserves an honorable discharge today!

How to Help Suzanne Today
2) Sign the support petition
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/441448013?ltl=1152532709
to demand the immediate release of Suzanne Swift from Fort Lewis, WA where
she is being detained for refusing to return to her unit
where she was sexually harassed, abused and demeaned.
