The blast destroyed a US vehicle and killed five American soldiers, among them a sergeant, the Captain said. He added that after the explosion, the Americans opened fire indiscriminately and hysterically around the area, killing an elderly Iraqi woman who was in the grove nearby. The Captain said that the Americans then arrested nine Iraqis as they swept through the area raiding and searching houses after the attack.

In a dispatch posted at 7pm Makkah time Tuesday evening, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that a short while earlier, an American sniper had gunned down an Iraqi woman and her one-and-a-half-year-old child on a street in the middle of ar-Ramadi, about 110km west of Baghdad. The ar-Ramadi correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported eyewitnesses as saying that the American suddenly and without warning opened fire on a family consisting of a father, mother, and small child as they walked along at-Ta’mim Street. The witnesses said that the street was completely quiet prior to the killing.
The correspondent reported that a US sniper shot the family members in cold blood, killing the woman and child on the scene and wounding the father. The three were then taken to the Small Medical Center facility in the city, where a doctor characterized the father’s wounds as “mortal,” when speaking with the correspondent. The killing came one day after medical facilities in ar-Ramadi reported taking in the bodies of 16 local people shot dead by American snipers. Just three days earlier, on Friday morning, 25 August, US snipers in ar-Ramadi shot and killed three local men, one of them a 70-year-old, and then used the bodies for target practice.
(See “US snipers kill 16 Iraqi civilians, including four women, three children, in ar-Ramadi,” in Iraqi Resistance Report, Monday, 28 August 2006; “Americans kill three local men, one of them aged 70, in ar-Ramadi, then use the bodies for target practice,” in Iraqi Resistance Report, Friday, 25 August 2006.)

In a dispatch posted at 9:50pm Makkah time Tuesday night, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that on Tuesday morning, US occupation forces distributed questionnaires around major cities in al-Anbar Province. The correspondents for Mafkarat al-Islam in Hit, al-Hadithah, and ar-Ramadi reported that the surveys mainly asked whether local people would prefer to be under the control of the Iraqi puppet police, the Iraqi puppet army, or the US military.
Residents in Hit said hat their local notables and tribal shaykhs asked the Americans if they really believed in democracy why they would not add a fourth option ミ the Iraqi Resistance. But the Americans rejected that idea and told them that they had to chose among the three listed on the paper.Mosque loudspeakers responded to the questionnaire by calling on the local people not to fill in the papers at all, warning them that on Judgment Day they would be called to account for what they had done and filling in a paper requesting the rule of the Americans or their stooges would be serious. In the end, many in Hit refused to mark the questionnaires.
A crown of residents of the at-Ta’mim neighborhood in ar-Ramadi burned the questionnaire after the Americans had distributed them and then moved on to another neighborhood with the intention of returning to at-Ta’mim later to collect them. Some residents of al-Anbar Province opted to fill in the questionnaire by choosing the puppet police, in the hopes that local people might be recruited to serve in such a force, but most people refused to mark the forms, saying that the option they preferred was to have the Iraqi Resistance in charge and for all outsiders to just get out of their towns and cities.

US troops pull out of ‘Amiriyat al-Fallujah after curfew fails to stop Resistance attacks.

No information on the nature or extent of casualties in the attacks was known, since the entire area was under curfew at the time. Jaysh al-Mahdi threaten to kill tribal hostages in bid to seize control of mosque in an-Nasiriyah.
A day after violent confrontations between the Jaysh al-Mahdi Shi‘i sectarian militia and Shi ‘ Arab tribes in ad-Diwaniyah over control of lucrative sources of income from religious tithes and pilgrim donations, the fighting erupted in an-Nasiriyah on Tuesday between Shi‘i tribes there and the Jaysh al-Mahdi sectarian gunmen.
Quds Press reported from an-Nasiriyah that the Jaysh al-Mahdi on Tuesday threatened to renew violence begun on Friday in the al-Butaha’ area with the aim of seizing control there. A source in the puppet security services told Quds Press that Iraqi puppet police left their positions at the entrances and exits to the al-Butaha’ area after news reports that the puppet police chief in an-Nasiriyah had left his post after attacks by the Jaysh al-Mahdi on the al-Butaha’ Mosque and after the militia had abducted a number of mosque guards, sparking a major crisis in the city.
The Quds Press correspondent in an-Nasiriyah learned that a group of Jaysh al-Mahdi sectarian gunmen threatened to kill five civilians they had taken hostage ミ all members of the local Arab tribes ミ during their attack on the big al-Butaha’ Mosque. An informed source in the as-Sadr office told Quds Press that the Jaysh al-Mahdi gunmen might launch another attack on the al-Butaha’ district if the mosque, currently in the hands of supporters of Shi‘i religious authority Ayatallah ‘Ali as-Sistani, is not handed over to them.
The mosque itself is in actuality a Sunni mosque in a Sunni neighborhood that was seized by pro-American Shi‘i sectarians following the US invasion and occupation of Iraq in 2003. Puppet security sources said that the situation in the city was deteriorating seriously, since the Jaysh al-Mahdi was largely in control of an-Nasiriyah. They said that if no puppet regime forces were brought in, the entire province of Dhi Qar could fall under the control of the Jaysh al-Mahdi. More than 50 people were killed in fighting in nearly ad-Diwaniyah where Jaysh al-Mahdi militiamen battled Shi ‘ tribesmen and puppet regime and US forces for control of Shi‘i shrines in the area on Sunday and Monday.
