VietNamNet Bridge - The UNDP is raising US$10 million to help Vietnam clean the environment of dioxin-polluted hotbeds.
The plan was unveiled by Tran Xuan Thu, Deputy President and General Secretary of the Vietnam Agent Orange/dioxin Victims Association, at a press briefing in Hanoi on August 4.
Thu said the campaign has so far received positive response from several American and Swedish organisations.
Three US companies, namely Ford, Orion and Bem, are conducting research on detoxification measures for A Luoi district, a hotbed in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue, Thu said. He added research is also underway to help clean the environment surrounding the Da Nang Airport in the central province of Da Nang, Phu Cat Airport in the central province of Binh Dinh, and Bien Hoa Airport in the southern province of Dong Nai.
Vietnamese scientists also finalised a State-funded project on detoxificating these hotbeds, which is expected to become operational later this year through 2007.
Many scientists from Germany, France, Japan, the Netherlands, Canada and Russia have taken samples of earth from southern Vietnam to test dioxin levels. They confirmed that these areas have the highest density levels of the toxic chemical in the world due to thick spraying by US army during the war.
Time and Vietnam's tropical climate with high humidity levels, have helped the dioxin in the earth considerably be reduced as well as even disappear cases. However, former US military bases, such as the above-mentioned airports, still suffer very thick dioxin contamination, containing a level of hundreds of thousands of parts per trillion (ppt), concluded scientists.
