The source disclosed that Staff Colonel Hasan al-Bawi, the officer in charge of investigation of major crimes had been exposed several days ago after trying to rape one of the Sunni women being held in a prison under his control. The source said that the woman had been arrested because her brother was accused of being a member of the Jaysh Ansar as-Sunnah Resistance organization. Al-Hawijah.

Qadiriyah Sufi Order joins armed Resistance struggle, forming ‘Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani Jihadi Brigade in Kirkuk.

In a dispatch posted at 8:45pm Makkah time Wednesday nightafternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that a leading order of Iraqi Sufis had closed down their meeting halls (Takkaya) and formed an armed organization to take part in the Resistance movement against the US occupation and its Iraqi supporters. The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that the Qadiri Sufi order, whose ranks include Arab and Kurdish mystics had issued a statement in al-Hawijah, southwest of Kirkuk, announcing that their meeting halls were being closed and that their men had formed a fighting brigade known as the ‘Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani Jihadi Brigade.

A source close to the ‘Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani brigade told Mafkarat al-Islam that Shaykh ‘Abd ar-Rahim al-Qadiri, the Murshid (“guide”) of the Sufi order in Kirkuk, ordered his followers to close down their meeting halls and discontinue their intensive, daily “wird” prayers and recitations ミ in which they say praises and glories to God and mention His name in as many as 100,000 repetitions per day. The source said that Shaykh ‘Abd ar-Rahim had ordered his followers to form a jihadi fighting brigade to battle the Americans and the Iraqi puppet forces, as well as the Shi‘i sectarian Badr Brigades and Jaysh al-Mahdi militias, whose activities have become much more apparent in Kirkuk in recent days.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent reported that Shaykh ‘Abd ar-Rahim al-Qadiri, who is 55 years old, had disappeared from sight several days before the announcement of the formation of the ‘Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani Jihadi Brigade and it was believed that he would be leading the armed operations of his followers in attacks on the US occupation forces, their puppet allies, and the sectarian militia gunmen who support them.

The correspondent noted that the Qadiriyah Sufi Order in Iraq had been lead by Shaykh Muhammad al-Hallab, a man close to Iraqi Vice President ‘Izzat Ibrahim ad-Duri, who is currently in charge of Resistance activities in occupied Iraq. ‘Izzat Ibrahim ad-Duri is regarded as a follower of the Qadiriyah Sufi Order. After the American invasion of Baghdad, however, al-Hallab was deposed by various Muridin of the movement who accused him at that time of flattering ‘Izzat Ibrahim and giving him Sufi instructions for which he was not properly prepared, according to them.

In tandem with this position of withdrawing from public activity and accepting co-existence with the occupation, the popularity of Sufi orders declined in Iraq, starting in 2003 and particularly after the first Battle of al-Fallujah in 2004. Iraqis left the Sufis who disdained the struggle against the occupation in order to sit in their assemblies in mosques and meetinghouses by day and night, chanting the name of God and ignoring the Resistance struggle and other “earthly” concerns. The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent noted that this orientation was in stark contrast to the frequent mention of the Zionist occupation of Jerusalem in the Qadiri prayers, and their vocal insistence on the need for that city’s liberation.

Mafkarat al-Islam correspondents in Baghdad, Ba‘qubah, ar-Ramadi, al-Fallujah, Samarra’, and al-Mawsil reported a notable aversion of most people to Sufi celebrations, such as the Prophet’s birthday and the commemoration of the Prophet’s Night Journey (al-Isra’ wa-al-Mi‘raj) in the last two years as the popularity of Sufism declined sharply. Almost no one cared to commemorate those Sufi holidays in recent years.

When fundamentalists fighting in the ranks of the Iraqi Resistance destroyed the domes of tombs of various Sufi saints in different parts of the country ミ such as the tomb of Sahykh Muhammad as-Su‘ud and Khalil al-Fayyad, there was little or no public outcry, as the apparent indifference of the Sufi orders to the plight of the population under the occupation undermined sympathy for Sufism.

In addition to the unpopularity they were acquiring due to their stance on the occupation, another factor behind the Qadiri Order’s decision to join the ranks of the armed Resistance has had to do with the role of Iran and the pro-Iranian Shi‘i sectarian militias that support the United States. Mafkarat al-Islam reported that the Badr Brigades and Jaysh al-Mahdi had openly courted the Sufi orders for a long time in order to split them off from the rest of the Sunni population. Accordingly the Iranian-backed Badr Brigades and Jaysh al-Mahdi did not include Qadiriyah members on their death lists, as they did other Iraqi Sunnis.

Recently, however, the Qadiri Order became convinced of growing signs that this was in fact a ruse on the part of the Shi‘i sectarian organizations that sought to divide the Iraqi Sunnis and seize control of much of the country.

The famous Sufi (Islamic mystic) teacher ‘Abd al-Qadir al-Gilani (1077-1166) moved from his native Gilan on the Caspian to Baghdad when he was eighteen. In Baghdad he became an adept in philosophy and Islamic law according to the literalist Hanbali school. In 1127 he began to preach and his Sufi school of thought ミ the Qadiriyah order ミ steadily expanded. His writings were orthodox in content featuring some mystical interpretations of the Qur’an and his teachings attacked materialism and worldliness and stressed charity and humanitarianism. Many Christians and Jews are reported to have embraced Islam under the influence of his teachings. The tomb of ‘Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani is in Baghdad.

The formation of a similar Qadiri Sufi Jihadi unit in al-Anbar Province was reported in the story “Followers of Sufi Shaykh form Armed Resistance Organization join the fight against the US occupation,” in Iraqi Resistance Report Saturday, 9 April 2005.

Throngs of Shi‘i demonstrators, fed up with corrupt puppet regime and its skyrocketing prices, no electricity, no running water, chant support for Saddam Husayn in al-Basrah Tuesday.

In a dispatch posted at 9pm Makkah time Wednesday night, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that Colonel Nuri Ja‘far, the commander of the al-Basrah puppet police forces threatened hundreds of Shi‘i demonstrators with prison after their mass demonstration against rising prices, declining living standards, and official corruption went so far as to break out in chants for Iraqi President Saddam Husayn on Tuesday.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that throngs of predominantly Shi ‘ residents of al-Basrah gathered in the Abu al-Khasib area to the southeast of the city to protest the fact that electricity was being cut off constantly, that prices of fuel had been skyrocketing, that running water was largely unavailable in their city.

The correspondent reported that the protestors accused the current puppet government of corruption, denouncing it as the “government of American shoes.” And finally they went so far as to chant the name of Iraqi President Saddam Husayn, and to proclaimed in the Iraqi dialect that one who is facing death would be happy to have only a little heat to deal with. In response, the puppet police chief of al-Basrah denounced the demonstrators as “immoral” and issued an order that they be imprisoned and punished for having expressed praise for the Iraqi President.

Military sources claimed that the fire was not serious and, they said, posed no threat to oil production. The source said that such incidents were routine at this time of year when the heat is frequently higher than 50 degrees Celsius.
