Japan PM tells of Iraq pullout
From correspondents in Tokyo
June 20, 2006
JAPAN would soon end its troop presence in Iraq, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi said today according to reports.
Mr Koizumi told executives of his Liberal Democratic Party in a closed-door session that he would announce the pullout of the 600 troops later in the day, Kyodo News and Jiji Press said.
Officials would not comment but said Mr Koizumi would hold a news conference at 0400 GMT (1400 AEST).
Mr Koizumi would announce the withdrawal at the press conference, with the troops to return home by the end of July, main newspapers reported.
The reconstruction mission around the southern city of Samawah, in Al Muthanna province, marks the first time since World War II that Japanese troops have been deployed to a country where fighting is under way.
Due to the pacifist constitution, the troops are on a humanitarian, non-combat mission and rely on the protection of British and Australian troops.
Australian troops who have been guarding the Japanese contingent are now set to be transferred to new duties at the main coalition base of Tallil, near the city of Nasiriyah.
The Iraqi Government said yesterday its troops would take authority of the region next month.
