(Angus Reid Global Scan) – Adults in the United States are divided on whether their president should replace one of the key members of his administration, according to a poll by Opinion Research Corporation released by CNN. 39 per cent of respondents believe George W. Bush should fire defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld, while 35 per cent disagree.
In 2004, a series of pictures depicting the mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners by U.S. soldiers appeared in several information sources. A classified U.S. Army report states that some soldiers committed "numerous incidents of criminal abuses" and "grave breaches of international law" at the Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad. Both Bush and Rumsfeld publicly apologized for the incidents.
Over the past four weeks, six retired U.S. generals have publicly condemned Rumsfeld’s performance. John Batiste called the defence secretary "abusive" and "arrogant." Paul Eaton said Rumsfeld "has shown himself incompetent strategically, operationally and tactically, and is far more than anyone responsible for what has happened to our important mission in Iraq." 43 per cent of respondents believe Rumsfeld should resign, while 35 per cent want him to stay in his current post.
On Apr. 14, the White House issued a statement from Bush, which read, "Earlier today I spoke with Don Rumsfeld about ongoing military operations in the Global War on Terror. I reiterated my strong support for his leadership during this historic and challenging time for our nation."
In an interview broadcast on Apr. 30 on Britain’s ITV, U.S. state secretary Colin Powell revealed that he had asked for a larger number of troops to be deployed to Iraq, saying, "The case was made, it was listened to, it was considered. (...) A judgment was made by those responsible that the troop strength was adequate. And so it was not anything that was ignored, it was considered and a judgment was made by those responsible for making military judgments that the troop strength was adequate."
Powell gained notoriety after acting as chairman of the joint chiefs of staff from 1989 to 1993, a period which included the first Persian Gulf war.
