In a dispatch posted at 11:25am Makkah time Tuesday morning, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that fierce fighting was raging at the time of reporting in the northern Baghdad area of al-Azamiyah between Iraqi Resistance fighters and US and Iraqi puppet troops.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported eyewitnesses in al-Azamiyah as saying that the battle broke out on Tuesday morning when the joint US-Iraqi puppet forces attempted to storm the district in order to carry out mass arrests among the residents. Iraqi Resistance fighters among the local residents, armed with light and medium weapons and pipe rockets resisted the American-led assault.

The Americans were seen bringing in numerous US and Iraqi puppet army reinforcements backed up by helicopter gun ships that had all been massing on perimeter of al-Azamiyah in preparation for a major assault.

The predominantly Sunni district of al-Azamiyah was the scene of a ferocious battle that raged from the pre-dawn hours of Monday until Monday evening as local residents resisted attempts by American-backed Shii sectarian militias and puppet security forces to break into the district. The sectarian militias and security services are infamous for the kidnapping, savage torture, and murder of many of their Sunni prisoners. The uneasy calm that settled over the defiant district late Monday was broken Tuesday morning when US troops took over from their sectarian allies in leading the assault.

The correspondent reported that most of those who have come into the area to fight are without weapons, however, due to the tight ring imposed on the district by the Americans. The volunteers came on foot from the nearby Bab al-Muazzam area to the south. It was not immediately know whether the local people were in a position to provide the volunteers with arms or not.

In a dispatch posted at 3:45pm Makkah time Tuesday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that a new force of a large number of pro-American Shii sectarian militiamen had stormed the al-Azamiyah district.

Full scale street fighting was underway in that area, the correspondent reported, adding that local residents and Resistance fighters atop roofs of houses and mosques and in the streets were attempting to block the Sectarians assault. The correspondent on the scene said that the balance seemed to be tipping in favor of the defenders. Wrecked vehicles and corpses and body parts of pro-American Badr Brigade gunmen were strewn along the side of Antar Square.

Shaykh al-Hafiz Mahmud al-Azami spoke to the correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam near the royal cemetery in the center of the scene of the fighting in the middle of al-Azamiyah. Shaykh al-Azami said: the attacking Shiah fled from the battle after clashes in which they didnt hold up for very long. If it werent for the [American] occupation forces the people of al-Azamiyah would have wiped them out right then.

The correspondent reported that a mood of watchful calm prevailed in al-Azamiyah at that moment after the latest pro-American assault had been blunted and the Shii sectarian attackers had fled back to their district of al-Kazimiyah. Another assault by the pro-American forces is expected by the defenders of al-Azamiyah, however.

A meeting of religious leaders and Sunni tribal chiefs was expected to be held in the Imam Abu Hanifah an-Numan Mosque late Tuesday afternoon to discuss the latest developments.

Wary calm settles over al-Azamiyah. Residents place themselves under Resistance command, make ready for organized response to any surprise attacks.

In a dispatch posted at 7:30pm Makkah time Tuesday evening, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that calm appeared to have settled in over al-Azamiyah following the withdrawal of pro-American Shii sectarian militias and puppet Iraqi Interior Ministry Shock Troops (Maghawir) from the area around the defiant district.

US forces and an elite armored brigade of the puppet Iraqi Army deployed at the entrances and exists to al-Azamiyah, taking over from the sectarian militias whom they were backing up in the previous two days of fighting.
