British army doctor compares US invasion of Iraq to Nazi regime

LONDON (AFP) - A British doctor facing charges over his refusal to serve in Iraq told a court martial the actions of United States in Iraq put it "on a par with Nazi Germany."
"I have evidence that the Americans were on a par with Nazi Germany with its actions in the Persian Gulf," Malcolm Kendall-Smith, a doctor serving with the
Royal Air Force (RAF), told a court martial in Aldershot, south-east England.
"I have documents in my possession which support my assertions. This is on the basis that on-going acts of aggression in Iraq and systematically applied war crimes provide a moral equivalent between the US and Nazi Germany."
Kendall-Smith is charged with five counts of "refusing to obey a legal order" for refusing to go to Iraq in June 2005, when he was ordered to go to the British-controlled town of Basra in the south of the country. He also refused to carry out training related to the mission.
The doctor, who denies the charges, was decorated for his roles in Afghanistan and in the Gulf following Britain's intervention in Iraq, when he was deployed in Kuwait and in Qatar. He is currently posted at the RAF base at Kinloss in Scotland.
Kendall-Smith has dual British and New Zealand nationality .
The court martial is due to retire on Thursday before giving its verdict in the case, which began on Tuesday.
