US forces carry out second campaign of mass arrests in Zawbi area in one week, in keeping with threats of American-installed Interior Minister Sulagh.
In a dispatch posted at 1:50pm Mecca time Tuesday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that US occupation troops launched a massive campaign in tha Zawbi area southeast of al-Fallujah, the home district of Shaykh Harith ad-Darri, the General Secretary of the Association of Muslim Scholars of Iraq.
The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported residents of Zawbi as saying that US troops accompanied by puppet Iraqi army forces surrounded the areas of az-Zaydan, al-Annaz, and al-Haytawiyin in Zawbi and then launched house-to-house raids, arresting dozens of local residents. As of the time of reporting, 45 local people had been rounded up in this way but Zawbi was still sealed off and the campaign was not yet over.
Quds Press reported local eyewitnesses as saying that the Zawbi area was sealed off by dozens of heavy American military vehicles and that US helicopter gun ships were continuously prowling the skies over the village area.
Mafkarat al-Islam noted that Tuesdays campaign of house raids was the second carried out by the Americans in one week. They followed threats issued by the US-installed puppet Minister of the Interior Bayan Jabr Sulagh against the Zawbi area, the native region of Shaykh ad-Darri, a frequent critic of the puppet regimes sectarian repression of the Sunni population.
Quds Press reported that a few days ago Sulagh had threatened the Zawbi area with a massive military operation, which he claimed was intended to wipe out armed Resistance fighters operating there. Quds Press noted, however, that observers believed the US-Iraqi puppet army offensive in Zawbi was designed to provoke sectarian strife, particularly since two of Shaykh ad-Darris relatives have been assassinated in recent days as have numerous other Sunni personalities.
Such sectarian attacks are widely viewed as a part of an Anglo-American effort to rescue their failing fortunes in Iraq by sparking a sectarian civil war in the country enabling them to fulfill their plans of partitioning the country along ethnic and religious lines.
