"India, Pakistan, Iran to hold talks on pipeline"

LONDON, February 18 (IranMania) - India, Pakistan and Iran will hold their first three-way meeting next month on a planned multi-billion-dollar pipeline to bring natural gas from Iran across Pakistan, a report said, AFP reported.
Until now, meetings on the ambitious seven-billion-dollar project have been conducted at the bilateral level.
The talks would take place in Tehran, an official said after a meeting between India's Petroleum Minister Murli Deora and his Pakistani counterpart, Amanullah Khan Jadoon, the Press Trust of India reported.
It gave no precise dates for the meeting.
The announcement came after India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh reaffirmed the intention of India, which is a massively dependent on fuel imports, to pursue construction of the pipeline.
"We are committed to the proposed Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline," he told parliament.
"The economics of this project are currently under professional investigation by internationally reputed consultants. This is a necessary step in taking the pipeline project forward," he said.
Earlier, the Press Trust of India quoted an unnamed official as saying Singh conveyed "very strong support" for the pipeline project when Pakistan's oil minister called on him in New Delhi.
The ministerial discussions on the pipeline between India and Pakistan in New Delhi focused on evolving a joint strategy for negotiating a gas price with Iran and a project structure.
The talks were held at a delicate time as India is seeking to cement a nuclear co-operation deal with the United States that would see Washington assist India with a civilian nuclear energy programme.
New Delhi has been denied access to nuclear technology for over two decades since testing a nuclear weapon and refusing to sign the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty.
Washington, which accuses Iran of seeking to build a nuclear bomb and being a state sponsor of terrorism, has said it is "absolutely opposed" to the pipeline. Tehran denies its nuclear programme is a cover for building atomic weapons.
The pipeline is expected to come up for discussion when US President George W. Bush visits India next month.
India voted early this month to refer Iran to the UN Security Council over its nuclear programme. But it said its vote was intended to permit greater time to reach a settlement of the dispute.
India's hopes of importing gas piped across Pakistan to feed its fast-expanding economy gained ground after the nuclear-armed rivals, who have fought three wars, began a peace process in 2004.
