The witnesses said that the vehicle continued to burn for a long time after the explosion and that none of the members of its eight-man crew came out following the blast.
After the attack, the American column came to a halt and the US troops closed the road. Helicopters came in after about half an hour to evacuate the wrecked armored vehicle and the dead and wounded.
US seals off all-Fallujah as US troops arrive for new offensive against city population.
In a dispatch posted at 5:10pm Mecca time Monday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that the official spokesman for he Iraqi puppet army in al-Fallujah, Nahi al-Ka‘bi had told a press conference in the government office building in the city Monday morning that 1,000 additional US troops were going to arrive in the city in the next few days in order to reinforce the US and Iraqi puppet units already operating there. In the last few days, American and Iraqi puppet regime forces have been carrying out expanded operations against Iraqi Resistance forces in the city, the spokesman said.
The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam, who attended the press conference, reported al-Ka‘bi as saying the beefed up American presence was aimed at increasing “security” in the city.
Al-Ka‘bi added that they had received information that Resistance fighters ミ whom he dubbed “terrorists” ミ had been coming into al-Fallujah along its four different access roads. These fighters were joining up with local patriots ミ whom al-Ka‘bi inappropriately called “weak spirited” local people ミ and were carrying out armed attacks on US and puppet army forces, he said.
To respond to this increase in Resistance activity in al-Fallujah, al-Ka‘bi told the press, the reinforced American and Iraqi puppet forces are planning to launch raids and searches in every house and neighborhood of the city, in the hopes of arresting Resistance fighters and anyone who might be helping them.
At the Monday morning press conference, al-Ka‘bi declined to give further details on the impending offensive against the al-Fallujah population. The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent, however, noted that all the four entrances to the city had been closed as of dawn on Monday, preventing local residents who wanted to leave from getting out. The city remained sealed off as of the time of reporting.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that Shaykh al-Fahdawi has been one of the most prominent local notables who engaged in negotiations with the occupation. He had recently been urging local residents to volunteer to join the puppet army and puppet police installed by the US occupation forces, trying to justify such collaboration on the grounds that this would supposedly facilitate a withdrawal of American troops from the center of the city out to the American bases that ring ar-Ramadi.
