Sometimes...make that usually...the most accurate news comes closest on the heels of major events. In the case of Sharon's health breakdown, there were several news reports he had died...one of which came from no less a person than Mordechai Vanunu.
With Sharon's succession clouded, to cover up and delay the announcement of his death would not be politically out of the question.

Sharon is dead; Israeli government in panic and keeping it secret
Mordechai Vanunu was on the Charles Goyette Radio Show today, and as an aside mentioned that he had highly placed Israeli government sources who informed him that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was in fact dead. That the Israeli government is in a panic, because they have no one to replace him. The rule of succession is not clear. And all that Sharon has set about accomplishing in the past few months may fall apart with his passing. So his body is plugged into a respirator, access to him is restricted, and the news of his death is being covered up until the Israeli government can work out its problems. Listen at the link below:

Ariel Sharon Dead at 77

World Tribune is reporting that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon died at 1 p.m. Israeli time [6 a.m. EST].
Note: They seem to be alone in reporting this. Scroll down for updates. As of 1243 EST, the best guess is that Sharon is alive but in a coma.
Ariel Sharon dies
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, the most powerful Israeli leader in 50 years, has died. He was 77.
Sharon was declared dead by physicians at Jerusalem's Hadassah Hospital before 1 p.m. Israeli time [6 a.m. EST], Middle East Newsline reported. Authorities have already been notified of the death, and a government announcement was expected to be issued over the next hour.
