●AUTOPSY LINKS DEATH TO ANTHRAX VACCINE
Bioport Corp., the only producer of anthrax vaccine used by the
U.S. military, Thursday said it was shocked an autopsy linked an
employee's death to the controversial vaccine. A company spokesman
said Wednesday's statement by the Ionia County medical examiner was
the first time in 30 years the vaccine had been connected to a
death. More than 2.5 million doses of the vaccine have been
administered.

Coroner: Anthrax Vaccine Linked to Michigan Death
DETROIT (Reuters) - A Michigan medical examiner said anthrax vaccine may
have contributed to the death of a worker at the company that manufactures
the vaccine being used to inoculate hundreds of thousands of U.S. soldiers,
a newspaper reported on Thursday.
The company, BioPort Corp., expressed shock at the medical examiner's
comments to the Lansing State Journal, saying the death certificate of
Richard Dunn, 61, listed ventricular arrhythmia as the cause of death and
made no mention of anthrax or any underlying cause.
Dunn, who was required to take the vaccine for the deadly agent, monitored
test animals at Lansing, Michigan-based BioPort, the sole supplier of
anthrax vaccine to the U.S. military, which is concerned about the threat of
biological warfare.
Dunn, who died in July, received 11 doses of the vaccine, the most recent in
April. Ionia County Medical Examiner Dr. Robert Joyce said an autopsy showed
Dunn had an ``inflammatory response'' to the vaccine throughout his body,
according to the newspaper.
Joyce declined further comment to the newspaper about how the swelling led
to Dunn's death, but said Dunn did not show signs of anthrax in his body.
The autopsy was performed by a Grand Rapids, Michigan, pathologist.
``Even though they didn't find any anthrax in the man's system ... his
body's reaction to the vaccine contributed to his death,'' Joyce told the
newspaper.
Joyce could not be reached dire ctly for comment on Thursday. He said through
a spokeswoman the article accurately reflected his comments to the
newspaper.
In a statement, BioPort Chief Operating Officer Bob Kramer said the company
was ``stunned'' by Joyce's comments. About 200 people work at BioPort.
``Those of us who work here are confident that there is no connection
between his death and the anthrax vaccine,'' he said. ''To be clear, Dick's
death certificate specifically states the immediate cause of death as
ventricular arrhythmia. There is no reference to any underlying cause,
including the anthrax vaccine.''
The government's plan to inoculate all 2.4 million active and reserve U.S.
military personnel has been controversial, with small numbers of troops
being punished for refusing to take the vaccine out of fear it is not safe.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (news - web sites) (CDC)
found that a small percentage of service members complained of muscle or
joint aches, headache or fatigue after being vaccinated. But the CDC said
three separate surveys found no unexpected reactions to the vaccine.
In July the Defense Department said it would temporarily slow its
inoculation program because of a vaccine shortage. The shortage stemmed from
a delay in Food and Drug Administration (news - web sites) approval of a new
BioPort plant.
At that time about 455,000 of the 2.4 million troops had received
inoculations in the mandatory program. BioPort said on Thursday that 2.5
million doses of the anthrax vaccine have been administered in its 30 years
of licensed use.
``To the best of our knowledge, no death has ever been related to the
anthrax vaccine,'' BioPort's Kramer said.
