ホロコースト産業フィンケルシュタインをカリフォルニアの大学で呼んだ

主催団体は、イスラム教徒の学生連盟、Muslim Student Unionで、ユダヤ人の集団が抗議。かなり複雑な事情があるようだ。

Strained relations between some Jewish and Muslim student groups at UC Irvine first came to officials' attention in 2002, said Sally Peterson, dean of students. The university was deluged with calls in 2004 over the intent of about 11 Muslim students to wear graduation sashes bearing printed messages in Arabic: "God, increase my knowledge" and "There is no God but God; Muhammad is the messenger of God." The American Jewish Congress and other off-campus groups said wearing the scarves implied approval of terrorism and suicide bombings. Muslim students complained of slander. The debate got "out of control," Peterson said. Students were allowed to wear the scarves. Federal officials report escalating anti-Semitism at universities nationwide since 2000. The U.S. Office of Civil Rights is checking for anti-Semitism at UCI.

IRVINE -- An appreciative audience of about 500 students Tuesday night heard a Chicago professor, the son of Holocaust survivors, discuss who is responsible for the failure to achieve peace in the Middle East.

The event, sponsored by UC Irvine's Muslim Student Union and opposed by a number of Jewish groups, featured Norman Finkelstein, a political science professor at DePaul University. Security guards were on hand, and the gathering was peaceful.

"The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is remarkably uncontroversial when you look at the record," Finkelstein said in a quiet, measured voice. "The vast preponderance of what is called controversial about this conflict is fabricated to deflect attention from the documentary record and to sow confusion about that record."

The audience was made up largely of Muslim students.

"I'm here because I'm interested in what Dr. Finkelstein has to say," said Julianne Hing, a junior studying social ecology. "I think there's been a very lively and heated dialogue on campus about his speech. It's indicative of what's happening around the world."

Finkelstein's talk was part of "Holocaust in the Holy Land," a week of events sponsored by the Muslim Student Union.

Alex Chazen, president of Anteaters for Israel and of Hillel, an off-campus student organization, said his groups' main objection to the events was the use of the word "holocaust" to describe what is happening now.

"This does not warrant the term 'holocaust.' There is no systematic murder going on there. ... What's happening in Palestine is retaliation to terrorist attacks," Chazen said.

Nevertheless, he said his groups stand with the university on free speech.

"We see that they enforce their policies completely fairly," he said.

Marya Bangee, spokeswoman for the Muslim Student Union, said the title was chosen to be bold enough to attract an audience and to draw a parallel between Europe in the mid-20th century and the Middle East today.

"We want to raise the political debate," she said. "We invited Hillel and Anteaters for Israel to bring a speaker."

They declined, and a speaker who would have presented the opposing viewpoint pulled out.

"He said he was not willing to debate Norman Finkelstein," Bangee said.

Finkelstein has authored a number of books. In 2001, he published "The Holocaust Industry: Reflections on the Exploitation of Jewish Suffering." The book contends that American Jews have exploited the Nazi-perpetrated holocaust for political and financial gain.

"This speaker is way extreme," said Rabbi Marc S. Dworkin, executive director of the American Jewish Committee in Orange County. "He's off the scale. He's a constant Israel basher."

Sally Peterson, UCI's dean of students, said the university's policy is to remain neutral and uphold free speech.

"In general, Muslim and Jewish students are comfortable on this campus and many are not involved in this issue at all," Peterson said.
