Polish Defence minister irritates Berlin over pipeline
From Poland A.M.
German politicians are outraged at comments from the Polish Minister of National Defence, Radosław Sikorski, who likened the German-Russian understanding concerning the northern pipeline to the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact.
Ruprecht Polenz (CDU), head of the Bundestag Foreign Affairs Committee called on the Polish Prime Minister to bring Sikorski into line. In his opinion, that kind of comparison is harmful for Polish-German relations and has no place. "Mr Sikorski should think about his comment and withdraw it immediately," said Hans-Ulrich Close from the SDP. Suddeutsche Zeitung thinks that the comments should be viewed through the perspective of changes in the current Polish government. "Sharp criticism of Berlin is being understood in Warsaw as a bid for the seat of Foreign Affairs Minister," wrote Suddeutsche Zeitung. The newspaper reminded readers that Mr Sikorski is the youngest member of the present government but does not have the reputation of being impulsive. (Rzeczpospolita, A8) S.D.

Germans, EU criticise Poland's Nazi slur
BERLIN (Reuters) - The European Commission joined top German politicians on Tuesday in rebuking Poland's defence minister for comparing a German-Russian pipeline deal to a pact made between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union.
Germany and Russia plan to pipe gas under the Baltic Sea and Poland is unhappy the project is being built without its involvement.
Poland's Defence Minister Radek Sikorski said on Sunday the plan was akin to the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact of 1939 when Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin carved up Poland between them.
German politicians called on Polish Prime Minister Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz to bring his defence minister into line and for Sikorski to withdraw his comments.
"Such absurd comparisons are harmful for German-Polish relations," Ruprecht Polenz, the Christian Democrat head of the parliamentary foreign policy committee, was quoted as saying by Bild newspaper.
Social Democrat foreign policy expert Hans-Ulrich Klose said: "Mr Sikorski should reconsider his comments and then withdraw them as quickly as possible."
In Brussels, European Commission chief spokesman Johannes Laitenberger said Sikorski's comments reflected concerns over the Baltic Sea pipeline which the Commission was seeking to address with proposals for a co-ordinated EU energy policy.
"That being said, the language being employed was certainly neither helpful nor proportionate to the project," Laitenberger told a news briefing.
The pipeline, backed by former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, is being built by Russian gas monopoly Gazprom and two German firms.
Sikorski told reporters in Brussels on Sunday that Germany's attitude undermined the European Union's common foreign and security policy.
"Poland has a particular sensitivity to corridors and deals above our head. That was the Locarno tradition, that was the Molotov-Ribbentrop tradition. That was the 20th century. We don't want any repetition of that," he said.
The pact was signed in Moscow in 1939 by the German and Russian foreign ministers of the time and named after them.
