Al-Fallujah.
Witnesses tell details of car bombing in which American forces admit 10 Marines were killed.
In a dispatch posted at 9:15pm Mecca time Friday night, the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in al-Fallujah reported that following the American announcement that a Resistance bomb had killed 10 Marines and wounded another 11 of them in al-Fallujah he spoke with eyewitnesses who work at the al-Fallujah white cement plant east of the city about the attack.
The workers said that an Iraqi Resistance explosives-laden car that was parked outside th main gate of the factory blew up at 10:3am local time the day before, as a US column of several Humvees and Zeal troop transports as well as American soldiers on foot was going past.
The witnesses said ht the blast killed or wounded a large number of the American troops.
The workers told the correspondent: “Because the blast was so strong and was followed by hysterical gunfire by the American survivors, we weren’t able to leave the plant and see what had happened.”
One of the guards at the cement plant said that the explosives-packed car had government number license plates belonging to the Ministry of Industry and Minerals. This fact was confirmed from the remains of the vehicle recovered after the blast.
The guard said that after the explosion US helicopters landed at the scene and for a full hour worked at evacuating the dead and wounded.
A manager in charge of production in the cement plant told the correspondent that the number of casualties reported by the Americans was not correct. He said that the way the US forces dealt with the blast was unprecedented and that indicated that the numbers was twice as high as that reported.
Local witnesses and residents of al-Fallujah were surprised at the attention paid to this particular attack since similar attacks take place every week in cities throughout Iraq and kill a similar number of people or more.
Mafkarat al-Islam noted that the US military announcement reported that the explosion occurred on Thursday night and that it was the result of a roadside bomb that exploded by a patrol. The American statement claimed that the bomb was hand made out of the remnants of several large artillery shells, a description completely at variance from that give by eyewitnesses.
