Baghdad.
US releases Iraqi puppet “Interior Minister” Sulagh after arrival of Rumsfeld. Sulagh, like Rumsfeld, has been linked to the widespread use of torture.
In a dispatch posted at 10:20pm Mecca time Friday night, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that US occupation forces had released the Iraqi puppet “Interior Minister,” Bayan Jabr Sulagh, just hours after the arrival of US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld in occupied Iraq.
The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported Lieutenant Colonel Husayn al-Maksawsi of the puppet “Interior Ministry” and a member of the liberal so-called “National Accord Party” led by former puppet “Prime Minister” Iyyad ‘Allawi (a rival of Sulagh’s Shi‘i sectarian Da‘wah Party) as saying that Sulagh and nine others were released but that Sulagh was still under investigation. All the 10 were believed directly involved in the torture of prisoners, mostly Sunnis, in prisons, some of them set up secretly for the abuse and murder of local Iraqi citizens.
Donald Rumsfeld has himself figured prominently in US media reports investigating America’s policy of widespread use of torture in occupied Iraq, Afghanistan, and Guantanamo, and in various in secret prisons run by the US military in Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe. “Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld bears direct responsibility for the torture and abuse of detainees in U.S. military custody,” said the American Civil Liberties Union and Human Rights First in a lawsuit the two organizations filed in the United States on 1 March 2005.
A press release issued by the American Civil Liberties Union in March quoted Lucas Guttentag, lead counsel in the lawsuit and director of the ACLU’s Immigrants’ Rights Project, as saying, “Secretary Rumsfeld bears direct and ultimate responsibility for this descent into horror by personally authorizing unlawful interrogation techniques and by abdicating his legal duty to stop torture.” Guttentag added that Rumsfeld, “gives lip service to being responsible but has not been held accountable for his actions. This lawsuit puts blame where it belongs, on the Secretary of Defense.”
In a separate incident, Hadi al-‘Amiri, the Secretary of the pro-American Shi‘i sectarian Badr Brigades ミ an organization itself at the center of the torture scandal in occupied Iraq ミ complained that the US had “violated Iraqi sovereignty” by arresting the “Interior Minister,” Mafkarat al-Islam reported.
The Badr Brigades took part in the invasion of Iraq alongside US troops in spring 2003, and since then have formed the backbone of the local security forces set up to support the American occupation. Given that record, it is unclear what “sovereignty” Hadi al-‘Amiri was referring to. Evidently he did not regard America’s full-scale invasion of Iraq or the installation in Baghdad of a puppet regime subordinate to Washington to be “violations of Iraqi sovereignty.” Al-‘Amiri raised the issue of “sovereignty” only when the Americans, whose occupation his Badr Brigade organization serves, arrested a particular “Minister” in the US-installed puppet regime.
Iraqi puppet regime issues arrest warrants for 25 officials of the Saddam Hussein government freed from US occupation prisons on Monday.
The US-installed “Iraqi Court system” has issued arrest warrants for the Iraqi officials who were released from US captivity on Monday. The puppet “Iraqi Criminal Court” issued a press statement in which it said that arrest warrants had been issued for 23 Iraq officials who were in the Iraqi government prior to the American invasion in spring 2003. The 25 had been released by US forces on Monday after having been held for two years by the American invasion troops in their prison camp set up at Saddam International Airport.
Quds Press quoted the statement issued by the Iraqi puppet “Criminal Court” as stating that “news media for two days had carried the report of the release of the accused persons Rahab Taha, Huda Salih ‘Ammash, Ahmad Murtada, Humam ‘Abd al-Khaliq, Sattam al-Ka‘ud, Asil Kamil Tabrah, Fadil Mahmud Gharib, Tha’ir Husam ad-Din, and Ibrahim Khalil Husayn.”
The puppet “Court” statement went on to say that the 25 were “wanted” for questioning in cases being investigated by investigative judges and that warrants for their arrest had been issued. The statement said that some of the 25 had already been rearrested by the puppet authorities.
The statement said that the 25 would be held and that no order for their release or release on bail had been issued, so once apprehended they would be imprisoned. The statement said “judicial steps” would be taken with respect to the accused and Interpol would pursue and arrest them as fugitives wanted for questioning if they left Iraq.
