Al-Anbar Province.

Ar-Ramadi.

Al-Qa‘idah fighters seize polling station in northern ar-Ramadi midday Saturday.

In a bulletin posted at 12:35pm Mecca time Saturday, the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in ar-Ramadi, 110km west of Baghdad reported that fighters for the al-Qa‘idah organization in the Land of the Two Rivers had seized control of one of the biggest polling staions in northern ar-Ramadi in the ath-Thilah area near the General Hospital.

The correspondent reported eyewitnesses as saying that the fighters killed all the Iraqi puppet soldiers whom they found inside the polling station and then set fire to the voter rolls and copies of the draft “Constitution” that the US is trying to impose on the country by means of the referendum being held today (Saturday).

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent reported that at the time of writing al-Qa‘idah fighters remained in control of the polling station and all American presence in the area had disappeared after a fierce exchange of gunfire at the time that the al-Qa‘idah fighters seized control of the facility.

Fierce fighting rages in ar-Ramadi Saturday morning.

Fierce fighting raged in the city of ar-Ramadi between Iraqi Resistance forces and US occupation troops on Saturday morning. Mortar shells blasted into polling stations and the headquarters of the so-called “Iraqi Islamic Party” which had urged Iraqis to support the US-backed “Constitution.”

A source in the Iraqi puppet police told Quds Press that fighting broke out on az-Zuyut Street in the middle of the city near the glass works when Resistance fighters armed with shoulder-fired rockets and anti-tank grenades ambushed a US patrol, setting an American military vehicle on fire.

Dozens of US military vehicles were seen deployed in the streets of the city. US forces used loudspeakers to call on local people to go to vote in the referendum in polling stations set up in US military camps. Local people boycotted the polls, however.

US aircraft on Saturday bombed areas in al-Jazirah an as-Sufiyah in ar-Ramadi after a number of US bases there came under Iraqi Resistance attack. A medical source in ar-Ramadi told Quds Press that ten wounded people had been brought into the hospital after the American air raids, two of them in serious condition.

Ar-Rutbah.

Fighting rages Saturday morning near Jordanian border.

In a dispatch posted at 10:35am Mecca time Saturday morning, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that at the time of writing fierce fighting was raging between Iraqi Resistance fighters and US and Iraqi puppet army forces in the middle of the town of ar-Rutbah near the Jordanian border.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in the area reported that 40 to 50 Iraqi Resistance fighters armed with medium weapons and pipe rockets were battling at that moment with US Marines and Iraqi puppet army troops in the al-Qassabin area of ar-Rutbah and adjacent parts of town.

Residents of the city who were witnessing the fighting reported that the Resistance had completely destroyed two US Humvees and a number of Resistance fighters were seen seizing weapons left behind by the Iraqi army troops when they broke and ran away from the battle.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent denied a report broadcast by the al-‘Iraqiyah puppet regime propaganda TV station that claimed that US aircraft were bombing Resistance positions. The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent wrote that US aircraft had been unable to bomb any target because the houses in which the Resistance fighters had taken up positions were too close to the US positions to allow for the use of aerial bombardment.

Al-Fallujah.

Six US troops reported killed, helicopter shot down in midnight fighting.

Iraqi Resistance forces shot down a US Apache helicopter in the al-Jazirah area west of al-Fallujah at midnight Friday-Saturday killing its crew of two US soldiers.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in al-Fallujah reported a source in the Iraqi puppet army who asked not to be identified as saying that a surface-to-air rocket brought down the aircraft. The source added that four Marines were also killed in the clashes on the ground in addition to the two Americans killed aboard the helicopter.

Eyewitnesses told the correspondent that US troops continued to encircle the crash site area through the night as they worked to haul away the wreckage of the Apache scattered along the banks of the Euphrates River.

As usual, the Americans made no acknowledgment that a helicopter had been shot down, taking advantage of the western media’s preoccupation with the US-backed referendum on the American-sponsored “Constitution.”

Abu Ghurayb.

Resistance bombards US Abu Ghurayb prison camp at dawn Saturday.

Iraqi Resistance forces fired more than 16 mortar rounds into the notorious US prison camp in Abu Ghurayb, some 30km west of Baghdad at dawn on Saturday.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in Abu Ghurayb reported a source in the Iraqi puppet army as acknowledging that 16 shells had blasted into the prison but refusing to provide any details on the resulting casualties, other than to say that four of the mortar rounds blasted into the sleeping quarters of US soldiers and prison guards.

Baghdad.

Fierce fighting rages in west Baghdad’s al-‘Amiriyah district Saturday.

Quds Press reported that the Iraqi Resistance had mounted fewer attacks on polling places during Saturday’s US-backed referendum than in previous American held elections since the occupation of the country in the spring of 2003.

Nevertheless, Iraqis endured a day-long ban on motor traffic and heavy US military security presence in Baghdad where many streets and intersections were closed and blocked by cement barricades.

Polling stations in Baghdad opened at 7am but turn out there was light. Later in the day Quds Press and Mafkarat al-Islam reported official government election commissioners as claiming heavier turnout in al-Khalidiyah, al-Habbaniyah, and al-Fallujah.

Quds Press reported that polling stations in the north west and southwest of Baghdad came under fire from Resistance fighters just before the curfew set in on Friday night. Other polling stations came under attack shortly before dawn Saturday. A puppet regime source in Baghdad told Quds Press that “a number” of polling stations west of Baghdad came under repeated attacks, but he declined to give information on casualties.

Iraqi Resistance forces attacked poling stations in western Baghdad’s al-‘Amiriyah district Saturday morning, sparking several clashes with Iraqi puppet regime troops. Resistance fighters attacked a polling station on al-Madayif Street in the middle of al-‘Amiriyah, sparking fierce fighting. An Iraqi puppet police patrol tried to reach the scene of the fighting but three bombs blasted the policemen on their way, wounding nine of them, including one officer, Quds Press reported.

Other parts of Baghdad were relatively quiet, Quds Press reported.

Ninwa Province.

Al-Ba‘aj.

Resistance fighter, reportedly a woman, blows up US checkpoint.

An Iraqi Resistance fida’i fighter, according to one report a woman, blew herself up by a US checkpoint in the al-Ba‘aj area southwest of Mosul in northern Iraq near the Syrian border.

The Mafakrat al-Islam correspondent reported eyewitnesses as saying that at least 11 US soldiers were killed or wounded in the explosion. A source in the local puppet police said that the Resistance fighter who carried out the attack was a middle-aged woman.

No Resistance organization had taken responsibility for the attack at the time the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent filed his report posted at 11:35am Mecca time Saturday morning. Neither the US occupation nor the Iraqi puppet regime had reported the attack either at that time, due to the remote location of al-Ba‘aj and the preoccupation of the western media with the US-backed referendum.

An-Najaf Province.

An-Najaf.

US forces arrest 27 Iranians for attempted vote fraud.

US occupation troops on Saturday arrested more than 27 Iranians in the southern Iraqi city of an-Najaf who were engaged in voter fraud in the Iraqi referendum on the American-sponsored “Constitution.” The Iranians were carrying forged Iraqi identity cards and ration coupons.

A Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in the area of Old an-Najaf reported that local residents told US soldiers that nine Iranians were heading to the Greater Khadijah School polling station with forged Iraqi papers. The American troops investigated the report and arrested the Iranians.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent reported that the Iranians spoke very good Arabic.

In a second similar incident, another Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent located on al-Muthanna Street in the city ミ the second largest street in an-Najaf where the pro-American Shi‘i religious leader Ayatallah ‘Ali as-Sistani lives ミ said that US occupation troops there had arrested about 18 Iranians who were distributing Iraqi currency and American dollars to local Iraqis who were boycotting the referendum to try to get them to go and vote “yes” on the US-backed “Constitution.”

The correspondent reported that the occupation troops refused to hand the Iranians over to the Iraqi puppet army, taking them, instead to their own US base near an-Najaf Lake.

Wasit Province.

Al-Kut.

Iraqi Anti-Corruption Committee charges deputies of pro-American Shi‘i cleric Ayatallah ‘Ali as-Sistani with bribetaking, embezzlement.

An Iraqi Committee for Honesty and Against Corruption announced on Friday that Shaykh Habib al-Khatib, the First Deputy to pro-American Shi‘i religious leader Ayatallah ‘Ali as-Sistani in the city of al-Kut was involved in financial corruption and accepting bribes from local people in return for facilitating their cases with bureaus in the Iraqi puppet government.

The committee said that al-Khatib had accepted bribes in cases of appointments and official procedures.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent n Baghdad reported that a member of the Anti-Corruption Committee said that citizens had reported giving money to Shayk Habib al-Khatib, in his capacity as representative of Shi‘i religious authority Ayatallah as-Sistani, in order to ease official procedures in state bureaus. The citizens understood that money paid to the representative of as-Sistani would be effective because “as-Sistani’s orders had to be obeyed.”

The Anti-Corruption Committee source, who belongs to the largest Iraqi “secular” parties said that the Committee estimates that the total amount of bribes taken by as-Sistani’s representative in al-Kut amounts to tens of millions of Iraqi dinars. In addition to bribery, the correspondent reported that there had been cases of embezzlement of Shi‘i pious endowment (waqf) funds which had found their way into the pockets of other deputies of Ayatallah as-Sistani.

Dhi Qar Province.

An-Nasiriyah.

US, Italian, Iraqi puppet forces seal off Sunni areas of an-Nasiriyah “until polls close.”

In a dispatch posted at 3:05pm Mecca time Saturday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that Iraqi puppet “Interior Ministry Shock Troops”surrounded Sunni neighborhoods in the southern city of an-Nasiriyah on Saturday morning.

Quds Press said that US and Italian forces had surrounded the Sunni neighborhood of Suq ash-Shaykh along with Iraqi puppet forces.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in the heart of an-Nasiriyah reported that the largely Sunni neighborhood of Suq ash-Shuyukhand a number of adjacent areas were completely sealed off by US forces and “Interior Ministry shock troops.” A source in the Iraqi puppet force said that the aim of closing down those districts was to prevent any members of the Sunni community from attacking US or puppet army forces. The source said that the Sunni areas would remain sealed off until the voting was over Saturday evening.

Sunni residents are very much concerned about the possibility of their being subjected to a campaign of mass arrests, particular after a leader of the pro-American Shi‘isectarian Badr Brigades announced the closure of the Sunni neighborhoods in the cit. “The Badr Brigade commander said that “we wouldn’t trust them i.e., the Sunnis even if they were prophets. That commander made his remark after the Sunni community in an-Nasiriyah had been described as peaceful
