Sunday, 6 November 2005.
Al-Anbar Province.
Al-Qa’im.
Resistance counterattacks at dawn Sunday, driving US forces out of two neighborhoods they had occupied Saturday evening. Heavy casualties reported among US troops.
Following a punishing dawn assault by Resistance forces, US occupation troops withdrew from the 7 April and ar-Risalah neighborhoods of al-Qa’im that they had stormed into and occupied late Saturday.
In a dispatch posted at 12:15pm Mecca time Sunday, the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in al-Qa’im reported that the Iraqi Resistance mounted a powerful attack on the US Marines, American storm troop division and commando troops at dawn Sunday morning. The Resistance detonated three booby-trapped houses and one telephone booth in the middle of the 7 April neighborhood after US troops entered them early Sunday. More than six US vehicles were destroyed in the course of the fighting.
Sources close to the Resistance told Mafkarat al-Islam that dozens of US troops were killed or wounded in the dawn battles. The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in the east of al-Qa’im reported that following the Resistance counterattack, the US forces took up positions in the desert area outside the city, apparently preparing for another large attack.
All the mosques in the city broadcast three chants of “God is greatest!” in unison from their loudspeakers to celebrate following news of the withdrawal of the Americans and their heavy casualties.
US warplanes violate Syrian airspace midday Sunday.
In a bulletin posted at 11:55am Mecca time Sunday morning, the correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam in the city of al-Qa’im on the border with Syria in western Iraq reported that a short time earlier, US fighter aircraft had violated Syrian airspace.
The correspondent reported eyewitnesses who live in the Makr adh-Dhib area as saying that they saw one of the American warplanes violate Syrian airspace in the course of an operation pursuing Iraq Resistance forces. Other witnesses from a border village confirmed that US warplanes had violated Syrian airspace.
Additional Iraqi puppet army division ordered to al-Qa’im from Baghdad following heavy losses on Saturday.
In a dispatch posted at 12:10pm Mecca time Sunday, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that Staff Colonel Husayn, a spokesman for the Iraqi puppet army in al-Anbar Province disclosed that an additional division of Iraqi puppet troops had been ordered from Baghdad to al-Qa’im to reinforce US and Iraqi puppet forces assaulting that city.
In an exclusive interview with Mafkarat al-Islam in ar-Ramadi, Colonel Husayn said that the Iraqi puppet “Defense Ministry” had announced what had taken place in Saturday’s fighting in and around al-Qa’im. The Iraqi puppet authorities were complaining that the Americans had forced Iraqi puppet army forces into the line of fire, placing them in the front line of the assault on what the Americans call the “insurgents” i.e., the Iraqi Resistance in the city. Colonel Husayn said that for that reason, Iraqi puppet army troops suffered heavy casualties and new forces were therefore being called in.
Regarding the status of the city of al-Qa’im itself, Colonel Husayn said that the battle had not yet been decided, “but I believe,” he said, “that the insurgents as he called the Resistance fighters are holding together and that they have a lot of staying power in combat.”
Later, in a dispatch posted at 3:05pm Mecca time Sunday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam’s correspondent in the western Iraqi city of al-Hadithah, east of al-Qa’im, that vanguards of Iraqi puppet army forces had passed through the city on their way to al-Qa’im.
The correspondent reported that the force, called “al-Husayn” was advancing up the International Highway towards al-Qa’im with dozens of fighting vehicles and troop transports.
The force also advanced under US helicopter and war plane escort, lest it come under Resistance attack before even reaching al-Qa’im.
Witnesses said that the first units of the Iraqi puppet army force were flying the sectarian green flag of the Shi‘i separatist religious authorities on which is written “Upholder of the Dynasty of Muhammad” their vehicles also carried portraits of pro-American Shi‘i religious authority ‘Ali as-Sistani and of Muhammad Baqir al-Hakim, the pro-US Shi‘i cleric who was assassinated shortly after returning to Iraq with US invasion forces in 2003.
Mafkarat al-Islam noted that in all the US campaigns against the Resistance in Iraqi cities ミ in al-Fallujah, Tall ‘Afar, and Samarra’ ミ the puppet Iraqi army units flew the sectarian flag of the Shi‘i separatist religious authorities ミ an indication that as far as they were concerned, they were fighting a sectarian war under the leadership of the United States occupation troops against the Sunnis of Iraq.
First bodies of Iraqi puppet army troops killed in al-Qa’im arrive in Baghdad.
In a dispatch posted at 12:45pm Mecca time Sunday, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that the first batch of bodies of dead Iraqi puppet army troops killed in the fighting around al-Qa’im had arrived in the al-Jadiriyah district of Baghdad at 11am local time Sunday morning. The headquarters of the puppet “Iraqi Defense Ministry” Committee for Military Affairs is located in al-Jadiriyah.
The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in Baghdad who was near the facility that is surrounded by barbed wire and concrete barricades reported that guards there had to fire shots into the air to try to break up crowds of relatives of the dead trying to force their way into the building to see for themselves whether their relatives had been killed and their bodies shipped back.
The correspondent was unsure as to the total number of bodies so far received by the department in Baghdad, but more than four Nissan vehicles belonging to the Iraqi puppet army arrived there loaded with corpses. Such vehicles usually carry about seven bodies.
US air raid destroys mosque in al-Qa’im.
In a bulletin posted at 1:35pm Mecca time Sunday, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that a short while earlier US fighter bombers had attacked the Ghazwat Hunayn Mosque in the al-Jam‘iyah neighborhood of al-Qa’im.
The correspondent reported that the attack virtually totally destroyed the place of worship. At the time of reporting, the correspondent wrote that it had so far been impossible to determine whether anyone was in the mosque at the time the US air raid destroyed it.
US stages airborne landing into city, sparking fierce street fighting.
In a bulletin posted at 5pm Mecca time Sunday evening, Mafkarat al-Islam reported from al-Qa’im that dozens of US troops had staged a parachute landing inside al-Qa’im. At the time of writing Resistance fighters were battling the American airborne assault.
The correspondent noted that US warplanes and helicopters provided cover for the Marines during the airborne landing. Street fighting, however, was raging on the ground as Resistance fighters met the Americans in combat inside the city. The battle was particularly fierce in the area of the market.
At least 10 US troops reported killed when house blows up over them.
In a dispatch posted at 5:30pm Mecca time Sunday evening, Mafkarat al-Islam reported from al-Qa’im that something less than an hour earlier Iraqi Resistance fighters had detonated a booby-trapped house in the ar-Risalah neighborhood of northeaster al-Qa’im when a group of US Special Forces Storm Troops were inside, killing at least 10 of the US troops.
The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam in al-Qa’im reported sources in the Iraqi Resistance who were coming back from positions in the front line of the engagements with the US troops said that the house had been completely destroyed in the explosion which the Resistance set off after a troop of Americans went inside with the aim of posting snipers on the roof.
The source said that the four corners of the house and an interior room had been mined with dozens of kilograms of TNT.
At the time of reporting, US troops with giant cranes and bulldozers or mechanical shovels were trying to raise the rubble of the house in the hope of finding some of the soldiers alive.
Iraqi Resistance shoots reporters for US propaganda stations.
In a dispatch posted at 5:35pm Mecca time Sunday evening, Mafkarat al-Islam reported from al-Qa’im that Iraqi Resistance fighters have shot correspondents of the al-‘Iraqiyah and al-Hurrah TV stations every time they try to get into areas controlled by the Resistance.
The al-‘Iraqiyah TV station is run by the US-installed Iraqi puppet regime, and of the al-Hurrah station, an Arabic language TV station based in Virginia, USA.
The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent reported that the reason the Resistance has been shooting reporters of those stations is connected with their coverage of the fighting on Saturday, where the Resistance fighters believe they distorted the real situation in the city and the nature of the Resistance fighters. The reporters of those propaganda stations, who were “embedded” with US troops, presented the city as if it had fallen to the US occupation forces.
When Mafkarat al-Islam asked on of the Resistance fighters in al-Qa’im why they were shedding the blood of correspondents for al-‘Iraqiyah and al-Hurrah, he replied, “they are spies who transmit news to the occupation and also they are liars.”
Resistance shoots down US helicopter south of al-Qa’im at sunset Sunday.
In a dispatch posted at 7:08pm Mecca time Sunday evening, Mafkarat al-Islam reported from al-Qa’im that Iraqi Resistance forces had shot down a US helicopter south of al-Qa’im at sunset on Sunday.
The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent reported eyewitnesses as saying that a helicopter was seen in flames in the air after being hit by ground-based Resistance machinegun fire. No further details were known at the time regarding the fate of the crew.
Resistance unleashes powerful bombardments on US troop concentrations following American appeal for Resistance forces to surrender.
In a dispatch posted at 8:30pm Mecca time Sunday night, the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in al-Qa’im reported that a short while earlier, US forces had released paper leaflets and also used loudspeakers in the area of al-Qaws on the eastern outskirts of the city to broadcast an official statement calling on the Resistance to surrender to the US occupation troops ミ who call themselves a “coalition force” ミ within 24 hours in return for an American pledge that they would not be killed if they so surrender.
The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent reported that the American “peace terms” were read out more than three times in a row.
The American calls met with a violent response from the Resistance which opened fire with mortars, Grad rockets, and Katyusha missiles on the positions where US forces are thickly concentrated.
General situation in al-Qa’im after nightfall: fighting intensifies; US controls positions in the west of the city; Resistance has extended its control to the south while repelling US assault from the north. Battle continues to rage around scene of afternoon American airborne landing.
In a dispatch posted at 9pm Mecca time Sunday night, the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in al-Qa’im reported that the intensity and grueling nature of the fighting between Resistance forces and the US attackers was intensifying, as three US formations and two Iraqi puppet army divisions continued their offensive on al-Qa’im into Sunday night.
Despite the heavy fighting, Resistance forces continued, to control numerous areas in the city.
At the time of reporting, the correspondent wrote that fighting so intense was raging on the eastern side of the city to the point that one could speak of street fighting there. Iraqi Resistance forces follow the movements of US occupation troops from street to street and alley to alley in the as loudspeakers from mosques continue to chant “God is greatest! God is greatest!” to bolster the morale of the Resistance men.
Over the loudspeakers of one mosque in the eastern part of the city an apparently elderly Shaykh is broadcasting his complaint to God over the official silence of the Arab states and outside world as a whole over what is going on.
Meanwhile, Iraqi Resistance forces have been able to keep the south of the city in their hands with no apparent attempt by the US attackers to storm in there. Fighting is centered, rather, in the north of al-Qa’im from which the Americans and their Iraqi puppet allies are trying to push towards the center of the city.
Following an airdrop of troops several hours earlier in the afternoon, US forces tried to catch Resistance forces in a pincer between the air dropped troops inside the city and the attacking Americans trying to drive in from the north. But the Resistance apparently saw through the American strategy and opened up with an intensive rocket barrage on the outskirts of the city, preventing any further American advance from the north.
The fate of the Americans who parachuted into al-Qa’im was, meanwhile, unclear. Fighting was still very intense and the Mafakrat al-Islam correspondent was unable to get to the area where the American landing had occurred.
Very many positions on the western side of al-Qa’im have fallen to the US attackers, however, who have made extensive use of dozens of armored vehicles and tanks as well as hundreds of Marines to press into the city.
In general, US forces were able to enter al-Qa’im on two occasions through three neighborhoods, but were unable to hold on there for more than six hours. They withdrew from an area called al-Maqali‘ that the Resistance had not originally even controlled before the battle began, since it is very open and easily attacked by warplanes.
In a dispatch posted at 9:05pm Mecca time Sunday night, the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in al-Qa’im reported that the Resistance forces appear to be intact and cohesive and all in control of their respective areas, having taken precautions following the threats made in previous days by the US-installed Iraqi “Defense Minister” that American warplanes would blow up anyplace where the Resistance was.
The correspondent noted that the Resistance had made use of little mistakes that the Resistance had made in previous sieges. This time equipment, food and water supplies are being provided to the Resistance fighters, field command has been placed in the hands of men with military experience.
The correspondent in the city reported that the battle is expected to be very difficult; if the occupation troops want to get into the city, the correspondent wrote, it will not be any easier for them than it was in the sieges of al-Fallujah.
In a dispatch posted at 9:20pm Mecca time Sunday night, the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in al-Qa’im reported that having walked ミwith difficulty ミ through various parts of the city he found that about half the inhabitants had left al-Qa’im in the three days prior to the start of the US bombing campaign. The remaining half of the population is divided between those holed up in al-Qa’im General Hospital and the field hospital, and those still in their houses clinging to the walls in hope of relative safety.
More than 50 persons have died in the American offensive so far, the correspondent reported citing preliminary figures, of them 29 women and children. More than 33 people have been wounded.
Despite the heavy American bombing, the correspondent said, the city remains intact and defiant.
