In a dispatch posted at 3:20pm Mecca time Friday afternoon, the ar-Ramadi correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that a short while earlier US troops had used loudspeakers mounted on Humvees to announce that they were banning children from playing with toy guns, laser pistols, and fireworks in connection with the popular celebration of Eid al-Fitr, now in its second day.

The correspondent reported that more than four Humvees threatened to kill any child who points a toy gun at a US Marine or US military patrol. The Americans claimed that they could not distinguish between the toy guns sold to children and real weapons. The Americans also said that fireworks might cause US troops to lose control and open fire on children or other civilians. The correspondent reported that people understood that the US forces would respond to children playing with toy guns and firecrackers as if they were real weapons. Upon hearing the American announcement, parents brought their children into their houses and ordered them not to go outside despite it being a festival time for fear of what might befall them at the hands of the US occupation forces.

The correspondent reported that the local people regard the latest announcement as another sign of the shattered nerves of the US Marines that they are unable to distinguish between plastic toys and firearms.
