British troops arrested in Basra
British soldiers had to jump from their burning tank
Two British military personnel have been arrested in Iraq amid claims they fired at police during a second day of unrest in the southern city of Basra.
The MoD could not confirm reports they were working undercover, adding the reason for their detention was unknown.
After the arrests, a tank outside the police station where the two were being held were set alight in a clash between British soldiers and protesters.
Troops were seen jumping from the tank and withdrew without returning fire.
Tension growing
It is not clear whether anyone has been injured.
The MoD confirmed British officials in Basra were trying to get to see the arrested men and find out why they were being held.
Protests followed the arrest of a senior Mehdi Army figure
A senior Iraqi official earlier told Reuters news agency the British military had told him the arrested pair had been working undercover in civilian clothes.
BBC world affairs correspondent Richard Galpin said tension had been growing in Basra since the arrest on Sunday of a senior figure in the Shia Mehdi Army militia suspected by the British military of being behind a series of attacks on troops.
His arrest drew crowds onto the streets of Basra demanding his release.
Our correspondent said British troops had since carried out further raids and made more arrests, sparking further unrest. But he said there were no reports of any injuries.
Violence has been increasing in the British-controlled Basra region in recent months, with two soldiers killed by a roadside bomb on 5 September and a third on 11 September.
