Tall ‘Afar.

More reports of American chemical weapon attacks, US forces bomb and shell civilian areas as massive American offensive on Tall ‘Afar gets under way.

The northern Iraqi city of Tall ‘Afar is now the target of one of the biggest US military offensives waged on Iraqi soil, one reminiscent in scope to that mounted by the Americans against the western city of al-Fallujah in November 2004.

Prior to the start of the offensive, sources in the Iraqi puppet army told Quds Press that some 5,000 US and Iraqi puppet army troops equipped with all sorts of light and heavy weapons, had surrounded the city on all sides and awaited only the command from their leaders to start a massive assault on Tall ‘Afar.

The sources, that asked not to be identified, told Quds Press that US troops from time to time would carry out localized attacks on various positions within the city ﾐ such as Hasan Koy and al-Mu‘allimin, both of which have come under violent American air raids.

Sources in the Iraqi Red Crescent told Quds Press that 90 percent of the people of the city had left the city largely deserted. Those families that remain have been told that they must get out within 48 hours. Leaving is easier said than done, however, because of the “security measures” imposed by the Americans at all the exits from Tall ‘Afar.

Even as US forces claimed that their offensive had not yet begun, US aircraft continued raids on various neighborhoods. On Thursday and Friday there were more than 50 American air sorties over the city, targeting houses and residential buildings. Although there were certainly civilian casualties in the air raids, the Quds Press correspondents outside the city reported that obtaining anything like exact data has been impossible given the American blockade imposed on Tall ‘Afar.

Not only has the pounding come from the sky. US tanks have been shelling positions that the Americans claim are occupied by Iraqi Resistance fighters on the edge of the beleaguered city.

There have been persistent reports that the American forces have not limited themselves to the use of conventional weapons. Medical personnel involved in evacuating and treating those wounded in the American air raids and bombardments have told Quds Press that the Americans have used chemical weapons against several neighborhoods in the city. In the Hasan Koy neighborhood, for example, the shelling inflicted burns and mutilation on the bodies of local people. A source who was able to get out of Tall ‘Afar on Friday, 9 September, told Quds Press that there are still numerous bodies strewn about the roads that show obvious signs of the mutilation caused by the chemical weapons.

Sources inside the city also informed Quds Press that elements of the Kurdish chauvinist Peshmergah militia and the Shi‘i sectarian Badr Brigades ﾐ the armed wing of the pro-American so-called Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution In Iraq (SCIRI) ﾐ groups known for their ferocity in dealing with the Sunni Arab population - are taking part alongside US troops in the assault on Tall ‘Afar.

Quds Press reported that tensions in the city increased greatly when the occupation authorities appointed a member of the Badr Brigades commander of the local puppet police. The sources in the city say that the new police commander undertook a massive campaign to wipe out all local policemen, replacing them with members of the Badr Brigades brought in from Baghdad and predominantly Shi‘i regions in the south of the country, creating an explosive situation.

US Apache helicopter shot down over Tall ‘Afar Saturday afternoon as fighting rages around city.

In a dispatch posted at 5:20pm Mecca time Saturday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that a short while before the Iraqi Resistance had shot down a US Apache helicopter in the as-Saray area in the center of Tall ‘Afar.

The downing came after news reports indicated that US and Iraqi puppet army forces had launched another savage offensive on the northern Iraqi city, before dawn on Saturday.

Residents told the correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam that the crewmen were seen bailing out of the helicopter in an area controlled by the Iraqi Resistance. They confirmed that the Apache crashed atop one of the mud brick houses in the neighborhood, completely crushing it but not causing any deaths or injuries.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent indicated that reports from the front lines, meanwhile, were saying that clashes between the Resistance and the US forces had left four US vehicles on fire and that a number of US troops had been killed or wounded.

Late Saturday, the US-installed Iraqi puppet regime announced that it had closed the Rabi‘ah border crossing on the Syrian frontier not far from Tall ‘Afar. The regime also imposed a curfew in the border area from 8pm until 6am on Rabi‘ah, extending five kilometers into Iraqi territory.

Mosul.

Resistance stages deadly attack on US column heading towards Tall ‘Afar early Saturday morning.

Iraqi Resistance forces mounted a violent attack on a US military column on the road to Tall ‘Afar as it passed near the al-Mahlabiyah area of Mosul at about 8:30am local time Saturday morning.

Residents of al-Mahlabiyah told the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in Mosul that a bomb that was planted by the side of the main road in the area blew up by a column of four US personnel carriers and five Humvees that were headed in the direction of Tall ‘Afar in the west. The blast destroyed one Humvee, killing and wounding its crew of four US troops.

After the column came to a halt following the explosion, Iraqi Resistance fighters fired six mortar rounds into the column. One American personnel carrier was seen on fire as a result of the barrage.

Al-Anbar Province.

Al-Qa’im.

Doctors issue appeal over humanitarian crisis looming over blockaded al-Qa’im, following savage bomb raids that wiped out whole families.

Iraqi medical sources have issued a warning concerning the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the city of al-Qa’im in western Iraq near the Syrian border.

Dr. Hamdi al-Alusi, the General Director of al-Qa’im General Hospital told the press that a humanitarian crisis awaits the city if humanitarian organizations and other concerned groups in Iraq fail to provide needed medicines and other humanitarian items to relieve the suffering of the people of the city. Al-Qa’im, a city in which the Resistance proclaimed it had seized control, is surrounded by US forces, which have cut off the fresh water supply, electricity, and communications with the city.

Quds Press reported Dr. al-Alusi as saying that the bloody American bombardments of the city had inflicted a great deal of damage to people’s homes and businesses and to government buildings. Large numbers of families and civilians generally have been leaving the city as refugees for several days now, heading to nearby villages and towns out of fear of the continuing air raids and battles between Iraqi Resistance fighters and their tribal backers on the one hand and the American occupation forces on the other.

A physician in the city hospital in al-Qa’im said that US warplanes had bombed houses in the as-Sanjak area west of al-Qa’im, killing more than 30 people in one house where three families were living. US warplanes bombed another house in the as-Salman area in the middle of al-Qa’im, the doctor told Quds Press, killing a whole family of 14, including women and children.

Despite frequent US assaults on the Resistance in al-Qa’im the Resistance forces have been able to renew themselves, both within the city and in neighboring villages and towns, Quds Press noted.

Al-Fallujah.

Resistance fighters ambush joint US-Iraqi puppet army patrol in al-Fallujah market.

In a dispatch posted at 5:55pm Mecca time Saturday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that Iraqi resistance forces attacked a joint US-Iraqi puppet army patrol on the main street in the al-Fallujah market area near the Communications Building in al-Fallujah, 60km west of Baghdad.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in al-Fallujah reported eye witnesses as saying that Resistance fighters armed with hand grenades and medium weapons such as PKS machine guns ambushed the patrol, killing three Iraqi puppet soldiers and wounding three other troops ﾐ two of them Americans.

US soldier reported killed by Resistance sharpshooter in ‘Amiriyat al-Fallujah.

An Iraqi Resistance marksman shot and killed a US soldier who was taking part in a foot patrol in the residential blocks in ‘Amiriyat al-Fallujah, a suburb southwest of al-Fallujah, west of Baghdad.

In a report posted at 2:10pm Mecca time Saturday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that a source in the Iraqi puppet army said that a sharpshooter’s bullet struck the American soldier, killing him instantly.

After the attack, US forces surrounded the housing blocks and searched them looking for the attacker. They found nothing.

Resistance bomb targets joint US-Iraqi puppet army patrol in southern al-Fallujah at dawn Saturday.

An Iraqi Resistance bomb exploded by a joint patrol of US and Iraqi puppet army troops in the ash-Shuhada’ neighborhood of southern al-Fallujah at 6am local time Saturday morning.

Residents of the ash-Shuhada’ neighborhood told Mafkarat al-Islam that a bomb that was planted in the middle of an unpaved dirt road in the middle of their neighborhood blew up as the joint patrol was passing over it. The explosion set one pickup belonging to the Iraqi puppet troops on fire. Three Iraqi puppet soldiers were killed and one other wounded.

Al-Hadithah.

Resistance bombards US camp near al-Hadithah dam midday Saturday.

Iraqi Resistance forces fired three mortar rounds into a US military camp at the al-Hadithah dam at about 12:30pm local time Saturday.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent reported residents of the area around the dam as saying that the US camp, located on the al-Hadithah dam, was struck by three Resistance mortar rounds that sent columns of smoke rising into the sky.

No information about the extent of damage or casualties was available.

Baghdad.

Resistance car bomb explodes by joint US-Iraqi puppet army patrol in eastern Baghdad Saturday afternoon.

An Iraqi Resistance car bomb exploded by a joint US-Iraqi puppet army patrol in the Jurf an-Naddaf area to the east of Baghdad at 4:30pm local time Saturday afternoon.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in Baghdad repoeted a source in the Iraqi puppet police as saying that an explosives-packed car that was parked by the side of the road leading to Salman Bak southeast of Baghdad blew up when a joint US-Iraqi puppet army patrol was passing by.

The source reported that the explosion destroyed one Land Cruiser belonging to the Iraqi puppet forces, and damaged one US Humvee. Two Iraqi puppet army soldiers were killed and three others wounded. Two US troops were also injured in the blast.

Resistance attacks US-Iraqi puppet army checkpoint in ar-Ridwaniyah Saturday morning.

Iraqi Resistance fighters attacked a checkpoint jointly manned by US occupation troops and Iraqi puppet army soldiers in the ar-Ridwaniyah area southwest of Baghdad at 10:30am local time Saturday morning.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in Baghdad reported residents of ar-Ridwaniyah as saying that Resistance fighters armed with light and medium weapons including PKS machine guns and PRG7 rocket-propelled grenades, attacked the checkpoint sparking a 10-minute fire fight.

The witnesses reported that some parts of the checkpoint, which caught fire, were destroyed in the attack about seven US and Iraqi puppet army soldiers were killed or wounded in the assault.

Three US troops reported killed, one seriously wounded in morning bombing near Jurf as-Sakhr.

An Iraqi Resistance bomb exploded by a joint patrol of US occupation troops and Iraqi puppet police on a farm road southwest of Jurf as-Sakhr (which lies south of Baghdad) at 9am local time Saturday morning.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent reported residents of Jurf as-Sakhr as saying that a bomb that had been planted in the middle of an unpaved farm road southwest of the town blew up under a joint US Army-Iraqi puppet police patrol. The explosion completely destroyed one American vehicle, killing three US troops and seriously wounding a fourth the witnesses said.

US soldier reported killed in roadside bombing in ad-Durah Saturday morning.

An Iraqi Resistance bomb exploded by a joint patrol of US and Iraqi puppet army troops in the southern Baghdad suburb of ad-Durah at 9am local time Saturday morning.

The Baghdad correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported residents of ad-Durah as saying that a bomb that had been planted by the side of the highway leading to the Baghdad al-Jadidah district blew up as the patrol was passing by.

The explosion disabled one Humvee, killing a US soldier and wounding two other American troops. Two Iraqi puppet army soldiers were also wounded.

Salah ad-Din Province.

Al-Mushahadah.

US soldier reported killed in noontime bombing of armored column.

An Iraqi Resistance bomb exploded by a US armored column on the road leading to al-Mushahadah, (north of Baghdad but south of at-Tarimiyah) at about 12 noon local time Saturday.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent reported residents of at-Tarimiyah as saying that a bomb that had been planted under a rubbish pile by the side fo the road leading to al-Mushahadah blew up by a passing American armored column.

The explosion disabled one American armored vehicle, killing one US soldier and wounding a second.

Babil Province.

Al-Latifiyah.

Four mercenary “security contractors” reported killed in morning bombing.

An Iraqi Resistance bomb exploded by a column of armor-plated vehicles of the type used by “security company” contract mercenaries employed by the US military on the main road in al-Latifiyah, south of Baghdadat about 10am local time Saturday morning.

Residents of al-Latifiyah told the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent that a bomb that had been planted by the side of the main road in the town blew up as the mercenaries’ column passed by.

The explosion completely destroyed one of the vehicles, killing the four foreigners inside.

In his report posted at 10:40am Mecca time Saturday morning, the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent said that at the time of writing US forces were encircling the area where the blast occurred, preventing local people and journalists from approaching.
