An elderly resident said that the Americans “used the Qur’an copy as a football, kicking it with their feet and laughing and making fun of us as we stood by helplessly.”

A source in the Iraqi puppet army confirmed the incident of the desecration of the Qur’an and said that the soldiers were trying to provoke Resistance fighters into coming out into the streets where they could be killed.

Looking emaciated, prematurely aged, Tariq ‘Aziz meets family members for first time since his capture in April 2003.

The daughter of Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tariq ‘Aziz, who visited her father for the first time in his prison in Baghdad a few days ago, declared that he told her that he is confident that he will be acquitted of any “crimes,” provided that he is tried before a just court.

Zaynab, 38, together with her mother and sister Maysa’, 30, visited Tariq ‘Aziz in prison in Baghdad at the beginning of the week. In an interview with the Jordanian newspaper al-Ghad published Wednesday, Zaynab said that their visit lasted 30 minutes and that conversation was about family and personal matters. It was the first time that US occupation forces allowed the Iraqi deputy Prime Minister Tariq ‘Aziz to see family members in 28 months of confinement since his arrest at the end of April 2003. The family members had to travel some 12 hours from ‘Amman and then back again for the half-hour meeting.

Zaynab told al-Ghad that her aunt, Tariq ‘Aziz’s sister Amal and her son Mazin also were present at the meeting but that US troops would not allow more than five persons to meet the Deputy Prime Minister. The visitors were also not allowed to bring anything in to ‘Aziz, even family and baby pictures. The guards also refused to let them bring in a letter written by Zaynab’s 8-year-old daughter Sama to her grandfather.

Tariq ‘Aziz’s wife, Violet, said that her husband had lost at least 15kg of weight and that he said he was now down to 68kg. Trying to raise her spirits, ‘Aziz joked with his wife, reminding her that she had been telling him to lose weight and now he had indeed lost his belly without the trouble of going on any diet.

Nevertheless, Violet ‘Aziz told al-Ghad that her husband, who is 69, now looked like an old man of 80.

Tariq ‘Aziz’s American captors keep him cut off from the outside world, so when he was told about the social collapse in the country, he expressed his sorrow at how conditions in Iraq have deteriorated since the US occupation and the fact that Iraqis now lack the basic municipal and social services provided as a matter of course prior to the American invasion.

American troops were present throughout the entire meeting, as was a translator who translated the family’s conversation for the American jailers. When Tariq ‘Aziz asked about his second son, Saddam, a dental student in another Arab country, he turned to the translator to remind him that he was asking about his son, not the President of Iraq, Saddam Hussein, whom US forces have also imprisoned. The Americans required that Tariq ‘Aziz’s conversation not touch on such political matters.

Board of Muslim ‘Ulama’ denounces draft “constitution” as preparation for the partition of Iraq.

The Board of Muslim ‘Ulama’Scholars, the highest religious authority for Sunni Muslims in occupied Iraq, denounced the planned “constitution” that has been drawn up under US auspices as “a preparation for the partition of Iraq.”

The Board statement, issued on Wednesday, said, “We have already said that any political activity carried out under American hegemony and it hated occupation of Iraq will be surrounded by doubts and can never be in the interests of Iraq. The so-called effort to frame a permanent constitution has confirmed that. Just like previous activities, it has confirmed the veracity of our assessment.”

The Board of Muslim ‘Ulama’ wrote, “in a special study on this subject we already warned that the present situation with all its complexity is not an appropriate for laying down a constitution that would enjoy public acceptance and preserve the unity of Iraq and its supreme interests. It is therefore better for everyone if the date for laying down of the constitution is postponed until after the departure of the occupation.”

The Board said that the present draft “constitution” is “a farce that could lead to the partition and break up of Iraq, and work to stamp out the country’s true identity and obliterate its heritage.” The document “failed to attain even the minimum amount of necessary national consensus needed to confer legitimacy on any constitution. The reason for this failure lies with the American administration that oversaw this process and brazenly interfered in it. For the US is no longer able ミ as is completely evident ミ to deliver Iraq from its critical difficulties, including its political impasse. Blame for the failure also rests with the National Assembly and the present government,” the Board of Muslim ‘Ulama’ statement said.

The Badr Brigade gangs had also set fire to the as-Sadr office in the city.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in an-Najaf reported that Ahmad al-Karbala’i, a spokesman for Shi ‘ religious leader Muqtada as-Sadr, announced that Badr Brigade gunmen had killed six members of the Jaysh al-Mahdi militia, which is loyal to Muqtada as-Sadr, in an attack on the local office of the as-Sadr movement. In fact, the correspondent writes, were it not for the open-ended aid given by Tehran and pro-American Shi‘i cleric ‘Ali as-Sistani to the Badr Brigades, the followers of as-Sadr would have overtaken the Badr Brigades as well.
