As sentiment among supporters of Muqtada as-Sadr and Jawad as-Salihi in southern Iraq’s Shi‘i population against the US occupation increases, the Shi‘i religious authority Ahmad al-Hasani al-Baghdadi on Wednesday evening issued a religious opinion fatwa in the southern city of as-Samawah in which he incited the Shi‘ah to fight the US occupation everywhere and to join ranks with the Sunnis in their fight ミ a battle that al-Baghdadi called a “sacred duty.”
The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam in as-Samawah reported from the office of the Shi‘i religious authority Ahmad al-Hasani al-Baghdadi that the Shaykh said that “the current situation in Iraq, in which there are campaigns of Judaisation and distortion and denegration of Islam and Islamic sacred values, in which Muslim women are raped and children murdered, impels me today to rule that a person who commits adultery with his mother openly in the holy mosque in Mecca and then goes to fight the Americans and wage jihad against them in the streets and lanes of Baghdad and the cities of Iraq is nobler and holier in the sight of God than the Imams sitting in Qom and an-Najaf.”
The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that the fatwa of Ahmad al-Hasani al-Baghdadi was circulated after US occupation forces distributed Christian evangelistic leaflets among the Shi‘ah of southern Iraq several days ago, as a part of the Christian missionary campaigns that the region has witnessed in recent weeks. Correspondents of Mafkarat al-Islam have previously reported on the campaign after they had personally obtained copies of the New Testament that US troops were distributing to Iraqis along with other methods designed to lure the largest number of Shi‘i Iraqis to convert to Christianity.
