At least 70 dead in Iran quake
UN experts were rushing to western Iran to assess damage caused by the powerful earthquake that killed at least 70 people and may have left thousands homeless.
Another 1,265 people were injured in the quake that struck the province of Lorestan with a force of 6.0 on the Richter scale before dawn Friday, Lorestan provincial governor Mohammad Reza Mohseni Sani was quoted as saying on state television.
Brujerd area was hit hardest. The earthquake left at least 45 people dead there and another 1,025 people injured.
"The successive aftershocks are still keeping the people in the streets. The search and rescue is going on, and people are waiting to receive their tents, blankets, and food," an AFP photographer in Brujerd area said.
People were using whatever tools were available to them to dig up loved ones and belongings.
"We stayed outside after the second tremor, but 14 of my relatives went inside since they could not tolerate the cold weather and some of them wanted to get ready for the morning prayers," 58-year-old Akram Jafari said, wiping dirt mixed with tears from her face.
"I kept telling them to wait more," she said, unable to continue as she sobbed and was consoled by other relatives who fled from neighboring areas in Lorestan province.
Interior Minister Mostafa Pour-Mohammadi told state news agency IRNA that he did not expect any major rise in the number of the casualties.
"Since people were warned before by two smaller quakes, I do not expect the number of dead to surpass 80 people," he said.
The tremor struck at 4:47 am (0117 GMT) following two others measuring 4.7 and 5.1, Iranian television quoted the National Seismological Institute as saying.
"The rescue mission will soon be over, and we hope to furnish the survivors with the tents and the blankets that have been sent before nightfall," Pour-Mohammadi added.
According to local officials, the areas hit by the quakes (between Brujerd and Doroud) were inhabited by around 200,000 people.
About 330 villages suffered 40 to 100 percent damage, Mohseni Sani was quoted as saying on state television.
According to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the Iranian Red Crescent has sent 100 rescue teams, or a total of around 300 people, to the affected areas.
Survivors are in urgent need of food, blankets and medical supplies, interior ministry public relations director Mojtaba Mir-Abdollahi told AFP, but said there was "no need for international aid."
"Currently the hospitals of the province are packed with injured, and the wounded are now being sent to neighboring provinces," Mir-Abdollahi said.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said in New York on Friday it was sending a team including representatives from the United Nations Children's Fund, the World Health Organization and the United Nations Development Program.
Despite acute tension over Tehran's nuclear program and neighboring Iraq, US President George W. Bush made a point of offering sympathy and assistance.
"We obviously have differences with the Iranian government but we do care about the suffering of Iranian people," he said while at a North American summit in Mexico.
In a rare direct contact between the two countries that have had no diplomatic relations for more than two decades, State Department Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns telephoned Iran's ambassador to the United Nations to offer assistance including blankets, plastic sheeting, hygiene kits, water units and temporary shelters for 100,000 people.
Iran sits astride several major faults in the earth's crust, and is prone to frequent earthquakes, many of them devastating.
The worst quake in recent times hit Bam in the south of the country in December 2003, killing 31,000 people, about a quarter of the city's population, and destroying the city's ancient mud-built citadel.
