BAY AREA
Higher peaks host snow
It's wet and greenish-gray, but to locals, it's cause for awe

The sprinkling of snow that fell atop the higher elevations of Mount Diablo early Friday morning didn't exactly transform the steep chaparral and scraggly oak-covered slopes into a winter wonderland.

But for Bay Area residents who don't see snow very often -- and even one woman who moved here from Siberia -- it hardly mattered.

Dozens of them took impromptu snow days, skipping out of school or work and heading up the winding roads of Mount Diablo State Park to Juniper Campground, where rangers blocked the road to the 3,849-foot summit and helped guide snow-goers into parking spaces.

They threw wet snowballs at each other, built small snowmen and took family walks through the snow, some of them pushing infants in strollers.

"Everybody seems to be having a good time,'' said Jeremy Olson, a ranger helping direct traffic. "People are in a good mood and are having a lot of fun.''

Overnight and early morning storms left a thin coating of snow -- maybe a couple of inches at most -- above 2,900 feet on Mount Diablo and atop other mountains and ridges from Mendocino to Santa Clara counties. It was slushy and sort of translucent, combining with the green grass beneath to give the East Bay mountain a grayish cast.

Becky Singh of Brentwood woke up Friday morning, looked out the front door and noticed that the nearby mountain was wearing a white cap. She knew what she had to do.

"We pulled our kids out of school for this,'' she said. "It's so rare.''

Her sons, Jaisen, 8, Jordan, 5, and Jaden, 2, romped around in the wet patches of snow at the campground, chucking snowballs and sliding around.

"They're really excited,'' she said. "They think this is a lot of snow.''

Irene Ilynikh, 39, of Walnut Creek, knew it wasn't much snow, but that didn't matter. A native of Siberia who moved to the Bay Area seven years ago, she needed to visit -- even though she and her family are heading to Bear Valley for the weekend.

"We always miss snow,'' she said. "Any chance to see snow, we come.''

She brought along her 5-year-old son, Alexander, who was born in San Francisco and shares her affinity for snow cultivated from living most of her life in Siberia.

"What I really miss,'' she said, "is on a frosty day when you walk on the snow and it crunches under your feet. Or the quiet when the snow is falling.''

The conditions were quite a bit different at midday Friday. It was cold -- in the mid-30s -- in the snow zone on Mount Diablo, but the snow was slushy and the coverage was patchy.

Still, it was perfect for snowballs -- and snowball fights, which was how Clayton Valley High School students Chad Jones, 15, Nick Gripe, 16, Katy VanSandt, 16, and Ashley Parker, 15, spent the early afternoon.

"It was really cold,'' said VanSandt.

"But it was worth it,'' added Jones.

Tyler Logue, 5 1/2, threw some snowballs but said he likes snow for another reason -- "because you can eat it.''

Bay Area residents with a taste for snow probably won't see any more of it dusting their local mountaintops this weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

A new storm is expected to arrive tonight, said Shawn Weagle, a weather service meteorologist, but it will be a lot warmer. And while there won't be snow, he said, high winds with the potential of knocking down power lines are forecast.

More storms are forecast into next week, he said, with a possible break Wednesday night and Thursday.

"And it looks like we could see another round of snow on Bay Area peaks again next week.''
