国旗と国歌の問題については、アメリカでも昔から、現在の日本と同様、さまざまな論争がなされてきた。
一例を挙げると、1968年のメキシコ・オリンピックで、陸上男子100ｍの金メダルと銅メダルをとったアフリカ系アメリカ人のトミー・スミスとジョン・カルロスが表彰式の時、こぶしを振り上げるパワー・サインを掲げて、星条旗に目をそむけるというパフォーマンスをした。
アフリカ系アメリカ人は、強制的にアフリカから連れて来られ、奴隷として約200年間の間、白人によって家畜同様の扱いを受けてきた訳だから、星条旗や国歌に対する忠誠などないというのがその理由だった。その後、約30年以上を経た今も、アフリカ系アメリカ人の間では、星条旗や国歌に対する反発には、大きいものがある。
「野球やフットボールなどの開会式には国旗掲揚と国歌斉唱が行われるが、アフリカ系アメリカ人の多くが起立しないで、座ったまま」（下記）という風潮が強い。

また特に最近はイラク戦争に対する人々の反発もあって、下記のサイトを読むと、白人の若者の間でも国旗と国歌に対する反発は多いことがわかる。

以前は、サンフランシスコの学校でも、毎朝、授業を始める前にクラスで国歌を歌うというところもあったが、私が通っていた学校ではそれはなかった。しかし卒業式では歌っていたように記憶している。
ところが今でも、下記のサイトのようにクラスで歌うことを行っている学校もあるようだ（ニュージャージー州）。これの左端の写真をクリックすると、教師が言うことを聞かない生徒たちを怒鳴っているのがわかる。

上記の事を例えば、沖縄人＝アフリカ系アメリカ人と置き換えると、ワヤクチャさんの気持ちはよく理解できる気がする。なぜなら沖縄は薩摩藩の植民地になり、次に日本の植民地となり、沖縄戦線では大変な痛手を受け、その上にアメリカ軍の基地として使われている。このことが日の丸・君が代に対する反発となっていると推測している。
しかし、同様の気持ちを出身地も年代も違う人に求めても、無理だと思う。理論的に、観念的に分かっても、心情的に100パーセントの理解はできないと思う。このことは、日本人がアメリカに行って、実際に差別を受けてみないと、アフリカ系アメリカ人の差別される気持ちが分からないのと同じだと思う。
結論としては、文化的・年代的に異なる者に、性急な意見の同意を求めてはいけないと思う。アメリカの例を見ても分かるように、時間がかかるかもしれないが、人々の思いは池に石を投げた時に広がっていく渦巻き（？）のように、徐々に広がっていくものだと思う。

An astounding trend is beginning to occur at America痴 sporting events. The next time you池e at a professional sporting event and the national anthem is played, take a look around. You池e going to see an amazing sight: people who are deliberately refusing to stand during "The Star-Spangled Banner." And these people will be African-Americans.
I started noticing this disgusting display of anti-American hatred about a month ago at a Major League Baseball game. I noticed a handful of people, all young black males, remaining seated and purposefully avoiding the appearance of any respect or allegiance to our national anthem.
Last night, I was sitting two rows behind what appeared to be a black family. Most of the family stood during the playing of the anthem. But two 20-something young men in the group stayed seated. Worse, they kept their baseball caps on and made quite a show out of shoving nachos and hot dogs in their mouths as the rest of us stood with our hands over our hearts and sang along.
I sat there steaming mad for about half the game. Finally, I couldn稚 stand it anymore. I decided to approach these young men. I respectfully and politely asked one of them, "May I ask why you didn稚 stand during the anthem?・The man, his face twisted with anger, said: "Because of what your people did to my people. Now go away, whitey.・
I used to be a college baseball umpire and a high school basketball referee, so I致e stood through many a rendition of the national anthem. As both an official and a spectator, I致e always felt pride that this was the one time that all Americans could stand united and pay respect and honor to the country we love. Up until the last couple of months, I致e never seen this blatant and shameful act of disrespect during the playing of the anthem.
Of course, there is a culprit here. When a Democratic state legislator from Tennessee, a black woman, started refusing to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance, a trend was born. The story of how the Tennessee House speaker tried to diplomatically reason with this kooky woman and ask her to leave the chamber if she wasn稚 going to stand made national news.
This happened within the last two months, just about the time I started watching people stage their great sit-down protest. Perhaps this woman is proud of what she has created. Maybe she thinks there are other countries that are more worthy of her support and respect. Quite frankly, I wish she壇 move there and live out the rest of her days. And take these mean-spirited jerks I致e been seeing lately with her.
There was a bright spot last night. The family was rooting for the visiting team. The home team won the game in a squeaker, so the family wasn稚 very happy.
I cheered for the home team as loudly as I could, making sure the two young men who hate "whitey・so much could hear me loud and clear. I enjoyed yelling things like, "Too bad, too bad, not this time, hit the road, see ya, wouldn稚 wanna be ya.・Silly things like that. I screamed so much I practically lost my voice, but boy, did it feel good. It痴 just too bad that I wasn稚 really rooting for the home team; I was rooting against those creeps who insulted our country ・
