HANOI, Sept. 1 (Xinhuanet) -- A person from Vietnam's Hanoi capital, who died late last month, has just been confirmed to be infected with bird flu virus strain H5, local newspaper Young People on Thursday quoted the national anti-bird flu committee as saying.

The person from the rural district of Soc Son died of acute pneumonia on Aug. 28, the committee said. Since the first bird flupatient was detected in Vietnam in late 2003, up to 92 human casesof infections, including 42 fatalities, have been reported in 31 cities and provinces. Vietnam's Health Ministry has yet to confirmthe last several cases.

Late last month, the country's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development confirmed specimens from three rare civets born in captivity in the Cuc Phuong National Park in northern Ninh Binhprovince, which died late June, were infected with bird flu virus strain H5N1. This is the first time the virus has been found in civets, it said.

According to local veterinary agencies, up to 70 percent of waterfowls in the southern Mekong delta have been recently tested positive to H5N1. Vietnam has culled over 1,300 fowls in 8 localities of Dong Thap, Ben Tre, Can Tho, Tra Vinh, Yen Bai, Ha Giang, Bac Ninh and Hanoi since early April.

The country is conducting bird flu vaccination for fowls, mainly chickens and ducks, in 47 out of 64 cities and provinces. The total fund for vaccinating over 200 million fowls in the 2005-2006 period is estimated at 700 billion Vietnamese dong (44.3 million US dollars).

New chicken culling ordered in Thailand
www.chinaview.cn 2005-09-01 12:54:35

BANGKOK, Sept. 1 (Xinhuanet) -- The Thai government has ordered a mass culling of chickens in two provinces after bird flu was found in samples of native chickens.

Livestock Development Department Director-General Yukol Limlamthong was quoted by the Thai News Agency as saying Thursday that laboratory test results had confirmed bird flu in native chickens from the central province of Ayutthaya and the lower northern province of Kamphaeng Phet.

The department has ordered the mass culling of chickens in the areas and strict controls on the movement of poultry in nine provinces determined to have a risk of the disease recurring, he said.

Regarding Thailand's overall bird flu situation, he said that three provinces, Ayutthaya, Kamphaeng Phet, and Suphan Buri, are under close surveillance.

Yukol said that the situation is still worrisome regarding free-range ducks, as farmers have failed to report the numbers of free-range ducks they are raising.

The department allows farmers to raise free-range ducks, but concealing their numbers and the source of the ducks is illegal.

Some farmers, he said, are reluctant to raise their ducks in enclosed buildings as advised by the government.

Yukol said the European Union (EU) has recently sent officials to Thailand to examine local bird flu laboratories.

The Europeans said the problem of free-range ducks is a reason why the EU does not import raw chicken from Thailand.

Bird flu outbreak contained in north Thailand's Kamphaeng Phet province
KAMPHAENG PHET, Sept 2 (TNA) - Local authorities here have acted promptly to contain a new bird flu outbreak, announcing that an outbreak identified in four districts has been restricted.

The provincial governor and local health officials visited Ban Sabmanao in Klongthalung district to cull chickens and spray disinfectant after native chickens in the village were shown to be infected with the H5N1 avian flu virus.

Provincial animal husbandry officials said the province has enforced preventive measures to ban moving poultry in the four districts.

The cause of new outbreak may stem from fighting cocks moved to other areas where they have contracted the disease, the official said.

There is no report of the deadly disease in chickens raised in closed farming system or free-range ducks, he added.

The poultry have been under close surveillance and free-range ducks were registered with the authorities.(TNA)-E004
