Two cases of BSE found in state of Hesse

24. Juni 2005 WIESBADEN. Tests have shown that two cows in the central state of Hesse had mad-cow disease, the state's Environmental Ministry announced on Wednesday. The disease was discovered after one of the cows was slaughtered and the other died. As a result of the findings, 21 cows on the two farms in Hesse where the animals had been raised will be slaughtered and examined for signs of the disease. In all, the disease has been found in 11 cows in the state. Mad-cow disease, or bovine spongiform encephalopathy, is thought to be linked to a usually fatal human illness called variant Creutz-feldt-Jakob disease. Scientists believe it originated in Britain when cattle were given feed containing the ground remains of sheep infected with a brain ailment. That practice is now banned in the European Union. BSE tests are required for all cows older than 24 months and have to be carried out within hours of an animal's slaughtering. pra
