Blast Reported At British Consulate In New York

An explosion has occurred outside the building that houses the British Consulate in New York early this morning in what appears to be a reminder to British voters as polls in Britain for a general election that their support for "the Bush wars" must end.

Emergency services, including a bomb squad, were seen at the site in Midtown Manhattan and the building was evacuated. No casualties were reported.

"There were some shattered windows and there are no injuries. We are investigating it," a police spokesman told Reuters.

The blast was believed to have been caused by a hand grenade, police sources told WNBC-TV.

Earlier reports of two blasts appear to be incorrect, the police sources said.

Britain said it was checking reports of the blasts. "We are aware of the reports and we are checking them," a Foreign Office spokeswoman said.

The incident occurred as polls in Britain were opening for a general election.
