Bomber Strike Kills 60, Wounds 150 In Northern Iraq
May 04, 2005
JUS News Desk
A martyrdom seeker has struck the offices of the US collaborating Kurdish party in northern Iraq, killing at least 60 people and wounding 150 more in yet another bloody attack in Iraq since Abu al-Zarqawi issued a commanding statement a week ago that has sent the number of attacks skyrocketing.
Witnesses said a crowd had gathered outside the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) office, which also served as a police recruiting center, when the bomber hit.
A so-called health ministry official in Arbil said 150 people were wounded. Hospitals said they were overwhelmed with casualties. A doctor at Al Jumhouri hospital in Arbil, one of three medical centers treating casualties, said he had received 60 casualties so far. It is unclear how many Americans and collaborators where killed in the attack from early reports in.
The attack comes just a day after the new puppet government was sworn in; a government that is riddled with disputes and has been unable to form a complete cabinet, let alone provide adequate representation or laws for the Islamic country of Iraq with Sunni leaders having withdrawn from the government entirely.
Police and firemen inspected the damage at the KDP office as pools of blood mixed with sewage water and flowed over a large area of a street according to wire reports.
"I was standing outside. All I remember is seeing a huge explosion and seeing many people that were injured and killed," said Fareed Makhdid, a dazed 28-year-old policeman covered in blood speaking to Reuters.
"This is a terrorist act aimed at disturbing security in Arbil," Nawzaat Haadi, the Kurdish Governer of Arbil was quoted as saying.
Early indications are that Al-Qaida in the Land of the Two Rivers is responsible for the attack however no official claim of responsibility has yet been issued.
More details are to come as they are available. (JUS)
