BAGHDAD, Iraq ミ The U.S. military said Tuesday it had lost contact with two jets flying in support of operations in Iraq.
The status of the two U.S. Marine F/A-18 Hornet aircraft and their crew was not immediately known, the military said in a statement.
Contact was lost at 10:10 p.m. Monday, the statement said. There were no initial indications of hostile fire in the area at the time.
Search efforts were underway, the military said. No further information was released.

The military said the two planes were from the USS Carl Vinson. The status of the crew is unknown and a search effort is under way.
The military statement said there was no initial indication of hostile fire in the area at the time contact was lost.
The U.S. military could not confirm by telephone any further details about whether the planes were single or two-seaters, could not say which squadron the aircraft were from or where the Carl Vinson was operating.

The officials, who spoke with NBC News on condition of anonymity, said there was "no initial indication that hostile fire" contributed to the loss of the U.S. Marine F/A-18 Hornet aircraft.
The fighter jets, based on the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, were reported missing at 10:10 p.m. local time.
A statement by the military in Iraq said search efforts were under way and that the status of the crew members was unknown.

US pilot's body from missing jet found

The US military is still looking for a second aircraft missing in Iraq
The US military has found the body of the pilot of a Marine Corps F/A-18 Hornet jet that crashed in Iraq but a second aircraft is still missing.
There were no indications that the plane had come under hostile fire and it was not clear if the two aircraft had collided, a US military spokesman said.
"We have not found the second pilot," he said on Tuesday. "The planes were flying too high to be shot down."
The search continued for a second missing crew member, the statement added.
It was unclear how many servicemen had been on board the two jets when contact was lost.
The US military lost contact with two Marine Corps F/A-18 Hornet aircraft in Iraq on Monday at 10.10pm (1810 GMT), a statement said.
The planes were from the USS Carl Vinson, the military added.
A heavy sandstorm and lightning hit central Iraq on Monday night.
