At Least 20 U.S. Troops Wounded in Iraq Jail Attack
Sat Apr 2, 2005 02:48 PM ET
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Dozens of insurgents attacked Abu Ghraib prison outside Baghdad on Saturday, detonating two suicide car bombs and firing rocket-propelled grenades at U.S. forces before the assault was repelled, the U.S. military said.
At least 20 U.S. soldiers were wounded in the fighting, which lasted around an hour, a U.S. officer said. At least 12 detainees were also wounded, some severely. It was not known how many insurgents were wounded or killed.
"A group of between 40 and 60 insurgents attacked the U.S. forward operating base at Abu Ghraib," Lieutenant Colonel Guy Rudisill, spokesman for detainee affairs, told Reuters, saying the attack began at around 10 a.m. EST.
"They detonated two VBIEDs (suicide car bombs) and also fired rocket-propelled grenades into the prison camp ... it was a sustained attack," he said.
U.S. forces responded with heavy weapons, and the situation was under control by 2 p.m. EST, Rudisill said.
"The attacks were intermittent. They would fire RPGs and then stop, then they would attack again," he said. "It's under control now."
Witnesses said the second car bomb was detonated against U.S. forces as they were trying to evacuate casualties from the first car bomb blast.
Rudisill said U.S. troops had sealed the prison grounds and it was not believed that any insurgents had managed to penetrate the jail's perimeter.
Abu Ghraib, notorious for the prisoner abuse scandal that emerged last year, is on the western outskirts of Baghdad. It is one of three U.S.-run detention facilities in the country.

20 U.S. soldiers hurt in Abu Ghraib attack
April 2, 2005
BAGHDAD, Iraq ― Dozens of insurgents fired rocket-propelled grenades and detonated two car bombs Saturday while attacking the Abu Ghraib prison in western Baghdad, wounding 20 American service members and 12 prisoners, the U.S. military said.
The attack, carried out by 40-60 militants, began as darkness fell on the city, 1st Lt. Adam Rondeau said. Soldiers and Marines stationed at the detention facility responded, and the resulting clash lasted about 40 minutes, Rondeau said.
"This was obviously a very well-organized attack and a very big attack," he said.
It was not immediately clear whether any of the insurgents carrying out the attack suffered casualties or were arrested.
Plumes of smoke were seen rising from the area.
Last summer, pictures showing soldiers piling prisoners naked in a pyramid at the prison were turned over to investigators. The resulting scandal tarnished the military's image in Arab countries and around the world and sparked investigations of detainee abuses.
The United States is holding about 10,500 prisoners in Iraq.

Abu Ghraib attack wounds 44 U.S. troops in Iraq
03 Apr 2005 06:06:27 GMT
BAGHDAD, April 3 (Reuters) - The number of U.S. soldiers wounded in a battle with insurgents outside Baghdad's Abu Ghraib prison rose to more than 40 on Sunday, from an earlier count of 20, the U.S. military said.
Most of the injuries were light, but several were serious, according to Lieutenant Colonel Guy Rudisill, spokesman for detainee operations in Iraq. All of the wounded were being treated at the prison's medical facility.
"There are 44 U.S. soldiers injured, but only a few of those are serious," Rudisill said, adding that there was no increase in the number of wounded detainees, 12 of whom were hurt in the well-organised attack, one of them severely.
At least one insurgent was confirmed killed in the battle late on Saturday, but the colonel said he expected the true toll was far higher after intense fighting that lasted around an hour and involved U.S. helicopters and heavy weapons.
A group of between 40 and 60 insurgents attacked the prison after dark, ramming a suicide car bomb into a perimeter building, he said. Another car bomb detonated shortly afterwards, as U.S. troops were tending to the wounded from the first.
Then rocket-propelled grenades, mortars, small arms and other weapons were fired at the extensive prison complex on the western outskirts of Baghdad.
U.S. forces called in air and armoured support and engaged the insurgents for around an hour, officers said.
The assault was believed to be the largest and most determined yet against the prison, which is notorious for the U.S. prisoner abuse scandal that emerged last year.
Abu Ghraib is one of three U.S.-run detention facilities in Iraq and holds more than 3,000 prisoners, all of them suspected of involvement in the insurgency. There is also an Iraqi-run section of the jail where criminal detainees are held.
